A friend is organising what promises to be a most excellent evening's entertainment on the 6th November primarily for the UK expat community in Florida; and has asked me to disseminate the following to interested aviators that are in the area:

One of the great legends in the British airline industry is Sir Freddie Laker.

Sir Richard Branson told me in Miami in April 1993 "Sir Freddie is my idol. Sir Freddie is a major reason I started Virgin Atlantic."

Sir Freddie was a pioneer and the FIRST entrepreneur in the airline business. He is an amazing, indefatigable 79 with that same fighting twinkle in his eye. He lives in Freeport, Bahamas in a house he and Lady Laker had built last year with a pied-a-terre in Boca. He still runs his successful charter airline business based out of Ft. Lauderdale & Freeport.

Sir Freddie and Lady Laker will be at The British Ball in Ft. Lauderdale on Saturday November 3rd.

This is a rare opportunity....he gets swamped with invitations and accepts few. He is such a super, amiable bloke and I think it would be marvellous to have British pilots & aviation biz people at the ball who admire him or just want to shake his hand. Sir Freddie will be accompanied by his longtime pilot pal, Terry Fensome, who flew often for Laker. Terry now runs Pelican Airways flying school in South Florida.

British showbiz celebrity Mike Winters of Mike and Bernie Winters fame and Florida's British Consul with also be VIP guests.

Moving onto (yet another) area where you're demonstrating your awe-inspiring lack of knowledge and intelligence: ESOPs. An ESOP is an employee share ownership scheme, and it's funded out of salary deductions. In very simple terms - so you can understand - no salary, no ESOP.

Now, you're making serious - not to say libellous allegations here that this is illegal. Care to specify precisely how this is?

Now, if I was you I'd just keep very quiet so we can all think that you're incredibly stupid - instead of putting fingers to keyboard and proving it.  Insane Big grin  Insane

After all it is only my 4th language, after both Dutch and French (yes, I'm 100% bilingual) and German.

So if Patricia Kawaja is organizing a meeting and you are promoting it openly (against the rules of this forum BTW), then I am poised to believe you might have a (financial) interest in it. Doesn't that sound reasonable?

The illegal part of your ESOP thing (under Belgian law) is that you take a part of the salary of an employee to invest in the company. A salary has to be fully and immediately available to an employee.
In Belgium only the government is allowed to confiscate part of the salary (prepaid taxes, social security, pension funding, etc.) Any other share of the salary can only be confiscated by courtorder. (alimentation for an ex-wife for instance ).
Having a mananger take a part of your salary (even when it is to invest in on your behalf) is just illegal.
I'm surprised you didn't know this.
I strongly advice you to look at your legal basis overthere, although I guess the UK will have less trict rules on all this. After all, we know what kind of a social wellfare state the UK is, don't we.?  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Sabenapilot, you're sorely trying my patience here. This is simply a social event that I have no interest in, financial or otherwise. It's being organised - as anyone with an IQ greater than that of room temperature can work out - by the Florida Association of British Business.

Actually, ESOPs are not illegal under Belgian law, as a quick discussion with an employment advocate would reveal. All you have to do is have an agreement between the company and the employee that authorises the company to deduct the ESOP payment at source. It's the same as the agreements for alimony, increased insurance payments, repayments of loans, etc etc.

You're really trying to squirm your way out of that one by bringing in (incorrect) statements about Belgian law when you know that my companies do not come under it in any way, shape, or form! That's like me saying that the Sabena bail-out is illegal under oh, let's see ... Lithuanian law.
