I just returned from a trip to Germany a few days ago. The flight was LH422 from FRA to BOS. As usual, the aircraft was a 747-230B. While in FRA, I realized that LH seems to operate a larger number of -430's than -230's but I have never seen a LH -430 in BOS. Have they ever flown them there? I'd love to see a photo of a LH 747-430 at BOS. I noticed that Virgin seems to alternate their between the 200 series & 400 series on their flights there.
But I have to tell you that the use of the B747-400 on both of Lufthansa´s FRA-BOS routes is not common.
After the events of September 11th and even it was planned to withdraw those B747-200 operating to Boston for years from service. But the replacement of these is the A340-300 on the route.
There is always the possibility for an aircraft change and thats also the reason for the shot but you´d rather
see the A340 taking over services to Boston than B747-400

in the past, LH has occasionally used the 744 instead of the 742s to BOS. however, they were never scheduled to do so.
this occurs even more often on the 742-runs from FRA to JFK.

According to Lufthansa´s new schedule for winter, LH422 from FRA to BOS will be done by an A340-300 from October 28th.
You will find that information by following this link: http://cms.lufthansa.com/LHe/images/MediaPool/main/5/mediafile69557.pdf (Acrobat Reader needed to view the schedule)
By the way, Lufthansa currently has 28 B747-430´s in their fleet whereas there are only 8 remaining 747-230´s (the oldest one is D-ABYM, delivered in 1978).
