Ever since it took over Panam's transpacific routes? Or after the collapse of Aeroflot?

Yes, AA is the largest, but I believe that UA's previous ownership of that title was attributed to their massive acquisition of routes after PAA collapsed.

United actually became the world's largest carrier after they acquired Capital Air Lines in 1961. They were solely domestic, and the Pan Am acquisition in the 80s gave them the Pacific, Atlantic routes.

United became the largest airline in the FREE WORLD after acquiring Capital in 1961. Aeroflot was the world's largest airline with a fleet that numbered almost 1,000 aircraft. Then, when Aeroflot fell apart, United became the world's largest.

However, there were a few years in the early 1990s when American actually surpassed United. But that was short-lived and American fell back to second largest when the San Jose, Nashville and Raleigh hubs were dismantled.

Aeroflot's fleet included military aircraft as well. Thus, it never was the largest Commercial Airline on earth........

Aeroflot actually owned every aircraft in the USSR - including crop-dusters, so it is not fair to compare to airlines.
