Does anybody know how long is a second officer at the controls per flight? And do they get to log it all or just the part they flew? And do they have any responsibilities?n One last question do they get to speak to ATC? I think that it is a great place to start as a pilot and understand hhow the cockpit works.

It depends on the policy at each company but usually the pilot and copilot alternate legs. General rule of them is one is flying the airplane the other is handling the controls. The right seat is where most people start out but I always thought the FE seat was the place to get to know the airplane. Unfortunatly they are getting rid of the sidesaddle seat.
