Super 727 Are They Worth It

What are your thoughts of taking an old 727 and making a Super727?

How much does it cost to reengine the outbound engines?

What else does the conversion involve?

Who operates Super 727s? I know SunCountry used to and Fedex has a few.

For the airlines or cargo carriers that want to keep the 727 it is a good idea. The engines are replaced with the JT8D-219, I believe, which are the same engines used for the MD-83. They are a lot more fuel efficient from what I understand. The cockpit is refurbished and the third man is taken out and updated systems are installed. The winglets are added for fuel efficiency. Sun Country and Pan Am both have Super 27's. I have seen a couple others, but I do not remember what airlines they were with. UPS has refurbished the engines on their 727-100's with Tay engines. The Tay's were not strong enough to power the -200, but fine for the -100. The UPS jets are quiet with the new engines on them but they lack the winglets. I believe the price range for refurbishing the airliners is (if I remember from a report I was reading) about $2 million.

You sure the FE position is removed? I have heard its still needed a flight crew of three.

My other question is...which engine is still used in the #2 engine....is it a -9 or -15?

If it only cost 2 million to reburbishing such a great airliner I don't see why more airlines have done this.

The FE is retained. Fedex converted 11 of its latest 15 722F's (the ones purchased new from Boeing in 83/84). The outboard engines are JT8D-217C; the middle engine the JT8D-17. Valsan went out of business hence the remaining 4 aircraft were not converted. Valsan converted a few others before collapsing.

By the time the 'Super 27' was re-activated, several years had passed and replacement/hush kitting decisions had largely been made by 722 operators. Hush kitting became popular because the capital cost was much lower...The Valsan/Super 727 is an expensive mod and any airlines choosing it would have to plan to operate their 722's several more years in order to achieve a reaonably payback.....likely only cargo operators would want to commit to retaining their 722 fleets for a long period.

Fedex ending up developing (with PW) one of the primary 721/722 hush kit platforms.....the rest of the Fedex fleet was thus hush kitted.


I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

Cougar Leasing Limited which is based at stansted also operates the 727-200 super.they have 3 727,2 of which is cargo,1 is used for passenger flights.
The pax aircraft s used for ad-hoc charters and sub charters for other airlines.
I have recently seen it at London Gatwick Airport a few times operating on behalf of jmc.
I have heard they are meant to be taking on more 727s.
If the us carriers are phasing them out then cougar will probably get a cheap deal.
