Which Is Closer To Manhattan?

JFK or EWR? it seems EWR from the pic below, so why dont all airlines fly there Confused

JFK is located around the Jamaica Bay on Long Island, maybe???
but aproaches going down the river (I don't know if it's hudson or east, it's the one that the brooklyn bridge crosses) are strictly for LGA. Although, after 9/11, I doubt that approach still takes place.

Why don't all airlines fly there?
I think that EWR is newer than JFK, thus most airlines have a history at JFK, and don't want to relocate. Also, JFK is the busiest of the three.

Actually, JFK is No. 2 out of three. Newark (EWR) is the busiest.

EWR 34.1 mil
JFK 32.7 mil
LGA 25.2 mil

Manhattan may be the center of New York, but it is exactly that, a center of a huge metropolis.
Each airport attracts people from different areas. Newark is popular with people from New Jersey and Pennsylvania, for those in anywhere East of Manhattan, or North, like Long Island, Queens, Bronx or CT, it's a big hassle to get to it, you have to cross the George Washington Bridge or take a tunnel and the traffic can be pretty bad. If you live in Manhattan, a cab ride there is more than a cab ride to JFK or Laguardia. However there is new train service from Penn Station that may not make it so bad now.

First of all EWR is the oldest NY airport, actually it was NY's first airport way before Laguardia or Idlewild/JFK were built. It was also the first airport in the Country (maybe even the world) with a control tower, paved runways and runway lighting.

If your in Times square, LGA is the closest at about 8-9 miles, EWR and JFK are almost the same distance from Times Square at about 15 miles. However if your talking about the West Side, Lower Manhattan, Wall Street, Greenwich Village, Chelsea, Tribeca or the World Trade Center area EWR is the closest. From EWR to the World Trade center is about 8 miles.

Upper East side residents of Manhattan are closer to LGA and JFK, Brooklyn and Queens residents will natuarally prefer LGA and JFK. For Staten Island residents EWR is closer and cheaper to get than JFK or LGA, and alot quicker too. To get to JFK from Staten Island you have to drive the Belt Parkway one of the Citys most congested highways, LGA is worse.

For people who live in the Bronx it's about even between EWR and JFK, to get to EWR from the Bronx you have to cross the George Washington Bridge. To get to JFK from the Bronx you have to cross the Tri-Boro bridge, both are toll roads and both are natorious for traffic.

EWR , because the way the highways are set up draw lots of travelers who live in Eastern Pennsylvania like Bucks County and Southern NY State like Rockland and Orange counties. On anyday walking through EWR's parking lots you will see many Connecticut plates.

Now with EWR's Airtrain, EWR is by far the most conveinant aiport in the region. NJ Transit serves the airport 3-4 times an hour from NY Penn Station, from Manhattan to Terminal C at EWR takes 30 minutes. Amtrak serves the airport every hour from as far North as Boston, as far West as Harrisburg and as far South as Newportnews and Charlotte. Philadelphia is 50 minutes to the airport on Amtrak, 1 hour 20 minutes to Stamford CT, 2 hours 45 minutes to Harrisburg, and 2 and a half hours to DC.

Note also that JFK is the major international gateway and many pax use it to transfer between international and domestic (USA) flights. For that purpose, the airport can be located anywhere.

because NJ sucks lol, given the worst airpot to have a layover in and its not in the greatest of towns. I wish different airlines flew into ISP but that is pretty much dominated by SWA now

Ewr is also VERY cramped. Because NY is soooo great, we need 3 airports, and all are at or close to capacity. There's no more room @ EWR.
I say You use all 3 airports differently. Here's my plan:

LGA
-all flights to EAST of Mississippi (except flt's with 767's and larger)

EWR
-All other national flights +all CO flights(after all, it is their major hub)
-Some International flights involving 777's, 767's, destinations to shorter international flt's

JFK
-ALL JETBLUE FLIGHTS
-ALL DELTA WORLDHUB FLIGHTS
-all 743+744 service to Eastern europe, asia, and Middle east


(I know, fantasy. but it WOULD be easier!, wouldn't it?)

You have MIA, ATL, CLE, PIT, and ORD ALL east of the Mississippi, many of which operate smaller aircraft on an increased frequency. Combine those hub flights with shuttles and commuter flights, you have an insane mess in a small airport.

Move AA and DL flights east of the Mississippi to JFK and keep the others at LGA. Also move transborders from Canada to JFK.

NJ is a much better location for an airport than JFK or LGA, NJ is the wealthiest State in the Nation. The Port Authority has some great stats about the airports, first EWR has the most business travelers with the higest household income. The average household income for LGA and JFK travelers is about $70,000 while EWR's is over $82,000, also not only does EWR serve NYC but NJ is the home of many large corporations such as Johnson & Johnson, Merck, Phizer, AT&T, Lucent, Prudential, Merril Lynch, Bristol Myeres Squib and so on.

These corporations help boost EWR's role as the preferred airport of business travelers in the NY region, JFK and even LGA have much lower percentages of business travelers compared to EWR. Not too many large corporations based on Long Island, and almost no business travelers come out of Brooklyn or Queens.

Rail service to JFK will begin within a year, which will limit EWR's temporary advantage in that respect.
JFK seems less delay-prone than EWR.
