MANILA (Reuters) - A missing Philippine airliner has been found
crashed on a mountainside and all 17 people aboard the small plane were
killed, airline officials said on Wednesday.
The domestic airliner, carrying 15 passengers and two crew, went
missing on Tuesday in the country's north.
Soldiers found the wreckage of the twin-engine Czech-made LET-410,
and the 17 bodies lying nearby, late on Tuesday night south of Cauayan
town in Isabela province, airline and civil defense officials said.
The plane had slammed into a mountain shortly before landing at
Cauayan, said Rodolfo Garcia, Manila airport manager for the Asian
Spirit airline.
Asian Spirit said two foreigners were among the passengers -- Briton
Robert Sinnott and Japanese Koji Takuma.
Japanese media said Takuma, 47, from Kitsuki City in Oita Prefecture,
was a project manager for Sumitomo Construction Co and was
supervising a bridge rehabilitation project in Isabela.
Sinnott, 33, was married to a Filipina, the British Embassy in Manila said.
His wife was not on the plane but other details were not immediately
available.
State air transport officials and airline staff have said the pilot made his
last radio call about 100 km (60 miles) south of Cauayan, indicating he
was preparing for landing. The weather was bad at the time, they said.
The plane, powered by Pratt & Whitney (UTX.N) engines, took off from
Manila at about 8:35 a.m. on Tuesday for the one-hour flight to Cauayan,
some 165 miles northeast of the capital.
