Vietnam Airlines To Buy 5 Airbus, 4 Boeing Planes
HANOI, Vietnam (AP)--National carrier Vietnam Airlines Corp. expects to sign contracts to buy five Airbus A321s and four Boeing 777s in February as it anticipates a recovery in the international aviation industry, state-controlled media reported Friday.
Vietnam Airlines, like other airlines around the world, has been hit by a decline in air travel and rising insurance premiums following the Sept. 11 terror attacks in the U.S.

Nguyen Xuan Hien, the airline's general director, said profits have fallen and insurance costs have gone up, the Saigon Times reported Friday.

However, the airline doesn't intend to lay off any workers, he said.

"We have suspended the annual intake of recruits, but pilots, engineers and administrators will continue to be sent abroad for training," Hien said.

Hien said he continues to be optimistic about the airline's earnings outlook, as a trade agreement signed between Vietnam and the U.S. in July 2000 - which is expected to become effective later this month after the approval of Vietnam's National Assembly - will create "a host of opportunities for Vietnam, which is now considered a safer place than anywhere in the Asia-Pacific region, including the U.S."

He also said Vietnam Airlines has implemented stricter security measures, including increased cockpit security, more thorough passenger checks and more security personnel on flights.

They had not ordered any 777s, only signed a LOI.

I have no doubt that they will be applying for N.American routes and I am certainly hopeful that IAH is one of the cities that they apply for. As Houston has the 2nd largest Vietnamese community in the US.

I expect Los Angeles will be one of the first US destinations for Vietnam Airlines. I think Orange County has the largest Vietnamese community in the US.

Oh, I have no doubt that LAX will be the first US city served by VN that stands to reason, (perhaps we are jumping the gun a bit, as they have not even applied for US service as of yet) but Houston would certainly have to be a strong contender fo VN service, possibly a direct flight via LAX. I also would guess that HNL would see VN service as well.

I certainly hope they send them up to HKG once they get them.........

Vietnam has huge air traffic potential - expect them to continue to expand at a rapid pace.

Very promising!! I do hope they place that order in February and that they eventually fly to LAX. Yes, the flights would need to stop somwewhere between SGN and LAX, possible cities would be KIX, NRT, ICN, TPE, HKG and MNL. The777Man

Need a Boeing 777 Firing Order....Further to fly....CI, MU, LX and LH 777s
