Good question, but I don't live in a UA hub city so I don't feel that I am qualified to answer or even comment on this.
As for the most modern fleet, I would sat at this moment JM has the most modern fleet with their all Airbus equipment. I believe that BWIA is still flying L1011s are they not ?
A little off topic, but there are wild rumours that BWIA was to start flights into IAH later this year, as a matter of fact I believe this past Oct was slated as the start up for these flights. Of course after 9/11 everything was pushed back. Has anyone heard anything about a Houston service ? If so, when ? JM just re-started their IAH service after a 20 year absence, so having a 3rd Caribbean (2nd colourful) carrier in Houston would be most welcome.

I don't know about the fleet, but here in NYC, (which has a large West Indian population), everyone seems to prefer BWIA much more than Air Jamaica, service-wise. I hear BWIA's crews are much much nicer, the seats are better especially on the new 738s and that their ontime departures are better.
I can't give you personal experience because I've never flown with either one. It seems that people even prefer BWIA over AA. Too bad AA has the most flights to the Caribbean from JFK.

Until BW gets rid of there L1011's and MD83's, JM will have the youngest fleet in the Caribbean. Although I am partial to JM since I worked there for 5 years, I am also fairly objective. On the A320's and A321's, I had about 2 inches of knee room while sitting with the seat in front of me completely upright. On US 737's, MD80's, 757's, DL 727's, MD80's, AA727's, MD80's UA737's, 757's, CO 737's and MD80's my knees touch the seat in front of me. Unfortunately, on the JM A310's me knees touch also. The A321's have the best exit row seating, there must be 4-5 feet between the seat in front of you.

I have flown both carriers on visits to the Caribbean and I have found this aircraft to be the best I have flown on so I guess my vote goes to it's airline as well. As for the flight crew I don't see any difference in either airline. They are just normal.

I will always put bwia first over any other airline.
but I must give credit where credit is due, and that means admitting Air Jamaica has a more modern fleet than Bwee.
Also power in numbers, AJ raises the bar with more aircraft. The only new planes bwee has are 6 738s, and 3 Dash 83s. The rest, as quoted above, are the dated MD-83s and Tristar 500s.

Air Jamaica has the larger and newer fleet with the A310s, A320s, A321s and A340 (with more A321s and A340s coming) - Bwee's new birds are the Dash 8s and 737-800s but the TriStars and MD83s, though very faithful, are getting it up in age. BWee is finding it difficult to replace the TriStars because of poor finances and the like - the MD83s will also be hard to replace as they have the ability to handle multi-sector intra-Caribbean flights such as KIN-ANU-BGI-POS-TAB-POS (or -POS-GEO) which is a DC-9 legacy. (JM also has MD83s but newer Airbuses will replace them.)
The service on both is OK - JM makes much about champagne but BW is actually more friendly and welcoming. They do serve wine on the longhaul routes such as to LHR with dinner - so what if it is not sparkling?
I am a Trini too and believe in my national airline. After JM's short stint into POS (during which they cancelled my return flight to POS from KIN) I got a bad impression of our fellow Caricom airline and though I would still support it over any overseas carrier I still lean towards BWee.
What I wish for is BW and JM to be more dominant in the Caribbean skies - they are still divided and relatively weak and AA continues to dominate. While the crash in NYC on Monday was a tragedy and I mourn with everybody else, the underlying moral of the story is the heavy dependence of the Caribbean on AA (it has some 70 flights weekly into the D.R. from MIA, SJU and JFK to Santo Domingo, Puerto Plata, Punta Cana, La Romana and Santiago) and the underlying vunerability which such dependence on a foreign carrier brings.

I know all the reasons why it wouldn't work, but in theory there is no -logical- reason why a merged BWIA-Air Jamaica could not do an `SAS' and be a reasonably successful multi-national carrier.
By the way, if you recall the now defunct Air Caribbean, that livery, displaying aspects of the Trinidad flag, was deliberately based on the SAS stripe of the now-old SAS livery, precisely for the possibility of a similiar future multi-nationalism.

Those L1011-500s were my favorite aircraft at one time. But, they are getting a bit long in the tooth. Will BWIA replace them, and when, is anybody's guess. As for the MD83s - hm....
Do they need to be replaced, though? Many airlines are still operating L10s. Air Transat has about what - thirteen of them (both 150s and 500s) - for example. I guess it's better to hang on to the old and survive, than to stretch beyond your means and become extinct.

Air Jamaica is a great airline.. i am impressed with their strides, nice aircraft in-flight service is good, excpet I am not very impressed with their "onBoard chef" cause the food doesnt taste that good Champange serivce is good, but doesnt necessarily make my trip more enjoyable..
Inflight service on BWIA is excellent, great food, good entertainment and the hospiality is better than most airlines.. The F/A's actually "ol talk" with you. I give BWIA the edge, but i hope both airlines succeed.
