BOS-GLA Route

I read in a magazine that Northwest Airlines used to fly a Boston-Glasgow route. The magazine also said that the route sustained high load factors, but had to drop the route in 1994, because they lacked aircraft and needed that one for cash-cow Japanese routes. Are there any plans to re-start this route either bu NWA or another airline. BA briefly flew a JFK-BOS-GLA return with 757s, but decided to drop Boston from that route the next summer. What aircraft were used when NWA did it, and how often was it flown? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thank You!

NW operated DC-10-40 equipment on the BOS-PIK (Prestwick, Scotland) route. I believe it was daily. NW also flew daily BOS-LGW with 747's.

With todays hub gateways, I seriously doubt you will ever see that route flown non-stop again.

CO is the only carrier to fly year-round non-stop from GLA to the USA, with a daily 757 (DC-10 in summer '99).

A few weeks ago I saw a British Airways 757 depart from Boston, so I think they still may operate their 757 from BOS to JFK first and then to GLA. I flew that route a few summers ago in the reverse direction from Glasgow. It seemed odd to me that we flew from Glasgow, right over Boston, to JFK and then turned around to go back up to Boston. I thought it would have made more sense to stop in BOS first since it's on the way. But I overheard a passenger talking to a gate agent that said the JFK to BOS segment allowed passengers flying into JFK from Manchester, England to connect to Boston all on British Airways. Anyone with a BA timetable might want to check the BOS-JFK-GLA route.

NWA used the DC10 on it's Glasgow route. I remember driving down there to see them a few times.

When International status was given to Glasgow it wasn't long before NW moved from Prestwick.

BA don't fly trans-atlantic from GLA anymore. Their only non-London longhaul services are Manchester-New York JFK (Daily, 767-300) and Manchester-Islamabad (3x Weekly, 747-400) and the Islamabad route is being withrawn!!!
Pretty poor really - some people are claiming BA should be renamed London Airways!!!!

Northwest's Glasgow-Boston route has effectively been replaced by Continental to Newark (Daily, 757 to be 767-200 when they arrive) and American to Chicago (Daily, 767-200 - Summer only I think?)

It is unlikely either NW or BA will ever fly trans-atlantic from GLA again

Hi Excelsior 767, chances are the 757 you saw from Boston was not flying to Glasgow but rather was operating on the Birmingham - Boston - Toronto route. There are currently no Glasgow to Boston BA flights. Either that or you saw a charted BA flight to Glasgow.
