What Airline Has Operated 747 The Longest?

What airline that still operates the 747 has operated it for the longest? What airline operates the oldest 747 (don't include cargo, just passenger)? What airlines have operated all versions of the 747, including domestic versions and the SP? Do any airlines operate ALL versions now? Have any airlines operated all versions at one time?

Qantas have had the -200 (almost counts as a -100 cos it was P&W and delivered in 1971), -200B (with Rollers under the wings, mmmnice), -300, -400, and -SP. And they are the only customer to date for the -400LR. The fleet still includes the -200B, -300, -400 and -SP. In any case the -SP is bizarrely based on the -100, not the -200, even though the -200 was well and truly up and running by the time the -SP was born.

Saudia and SAA have (or did at one point) the -100, -200, -SP, -300 and -400. Indeed, Saudia still have some -100s, so they have the full house right now, probably the only airline to do so (for some reason they uniquely bought some new -100s from Boeing in the late 70s, one of these aircraft tragically crashed in India a few years ago after a midair collision).

JAL have all "in stock" except the -SP which they've never operated (although it was designed very much with them in mind, so they could do JFK-TYO nonstop).

Air France have all except the -SP. Most airlines who ordered the -300 had -200s before it and -400s to follow, ie Cathay, Singapore, Thai, Air-India, Varig. Of this lot, only Air-India had the -100. None ever had the -SP.

One correction to Cedarjet. Neither SAA nor Air India ever operated the 747-100.

I'm pretty sure QANTAS was one of the origianl 747 customers; in fact for a while their jet fleet was all 747, I believe. (I could be wrong).

UA has operated them since thier introduction.They've operated all models but the -300.BTW I was connecting thru ORD yesterday I got to watch a couple 744's take off.Incredible,I never get tired of watching that! I don't get to see planes this big at home so ORD is always a treat!

When it comes to continuous service of 747's with one airline I think either JL or LH will win. I believe that both airlines got their 747-100's in the late spring of 1970.

You're correct. QF fleet was once entirely B747's (late 70's/early 80's - before B767-200's arrived)

RE QF operating a fleet entirely of 747's yep in the late 1970's- early 1980's. They even boasted about being the only all 747 airline in the world i think. Anyone know if QF lost money by doing this as the 747 is not really suited for some of the routes it was flying at the time e.g Sydney-Auckland etc???

NW I think was 1 of the first 747 operators, operating the 100, 200 and 400.

SAA would have to have the oldest pax 747's I think, their 200's were delivered to them in 71' 72 and still in service.

QF have always flown 747's Sydney Auckland I think and still fly them daily now.

Surely Lufthansa is one of the longest time B747 operators. They received their first B747-130 (D-ABYA) in March (10th) of 1970 as the first European operator.

As LH´s operating versions -230B, -230F and -430 since then they are now operating Jumbo Jet for 31 and a half years.

Sin777er: Yes you are correct I did miss much more, but I only posted the FIRST TWELVE customers up to Qantas & I didn't want to spend all day looking them up!. All of the ones you mentioned (except IBERIA who would be #8 del 2-Oct-70, oops I deleted that in error.) were delivered their 1st 747 after Qantas.

LH744: Yes basically, Lufthansa is the longest 747 operator.

Actually, at that time Northwest did not have Orient in the name. Orient dwas just used for a short time in the late 70's early 80's.

As Ned Kelly said, Lufthansa is the oldest 747-operator still around. LH was the first airline outside the US to recieve the 741 and the two american airlines that got them before are both gone now (Pan Am and TWA).

Lufthansa has indeed operated the B747 longer than any airline who presently has the type in their fleet. Pan Am (gone) and TWA (retired their last 747 several years ago) were the only airlines to receive 747s before Lufthansa. The first 747s delivered to PA and TW:

Pan Am, N733PA, 747-121, del. 12 Dec 69
TWA, N93102, 747-131, del. 31 Dec 69

Pan Am received 10 of its 747-121s and TWA 3 of its 747-131s before Lufthansa took delivery of D-ABYA, its first 747 (a -130) and the 14th 747 delivered by Boeing, on 10 Mar 70.
