The following decisions have been made at the Swissair employees meetings in Geneva which was held earlier this evening.

-- They voted no to strike action for today.
-- They set the 15th of November as the last day for a social plan.
-- They will block a Crossair Aircraft on the ground in Geneva for a few days, a plane that flies the GVA-BSL route (ERJ-145 I guess)

BTW, 200 employeees turned up vs 300 last Monday.

Teahan, do you know the background for all this?

What should have been the cause for the strike?

Nov.15 deadline for social plan... What plans are suggested? What consequense if the deadline isn't met?

Why block the LX plane to BSL? Is it a new version of the old SR "language war"? French speaking GVA workers envious because the German speaking ZRH was always the bigger SR hub? And now LX transfers part of that to also German speaking BSL?

And what about the 100 people who didn't show up yesterday? What do they expect? An extra bonus added to their paycheque?  Big thumbs up

Do you know what is going on? It can't be Sabena all over again. Or can it? It would be sad to see Crossair go down the drain too.

Regards, Preben Norholm

While my heart goes out to the SR employees, I fail to comprehend why THEY cannot comprehend their carrier is as good as gone. There is no money to sustain SR
into 2002. The Crossair "takeover" as such, may be a bitter pill to swallow, yet it is the only lifeline for the SR employees who will be fortunate enough (seniority) to be kept on. Strike? Against what? Against whom?
Blocking a Crossair aircraft? Blocking their future seems more apt. Please don't take my comments out of context, what happened to the employees of SR is
indeed sad, yet.....management just expanded and expanded and expanded.

Well the background is short and simple : The employees are not happy with what they are being offered within the new company and to tell you the truth, I can full understand them.

The cause of the strike would simply have been that they were not happy with the social plan. Hence what they would be offered in the new company and/or what they were offered if they were laid-off (such as 3 months salary) Consequences of the no agreeable social plan is presented? A strike, like the one that was called off.

I think the games of “We have the bigger SR hub” are long over. Being a Swiss-Romand, a few months ago, I was also part of those games, wishing Geneva would get more flights. Now, I and I bet other people are gone way past that. BTW, the Canton of Geneva offered the new Swissair a baseline CHF 10 Million + CHF 10 more Million per long haul they bring into Geneva.

Several hundred employees never show up to those meetings, generally the younger ones who couldn’t care less about a Swissair job or another job. It is mostly the older ones, who worked for Swissair for 15-20-30 years who show up, those who saw the company grow, those who’s family was Swissair. Looking at the TV report on TSR.ch (with the help of Real Player), I recognised quite a few employees, some of my mum’s friends/ex work-colleagues and so on….
