Win Fab Airline Book W/ A Poem About Airliners.net

One of the best airline disaster novels ever written is 'Collision' by Spencer Dunmore (1971). It follows a captain with epilepsy who crashes his brand new 747-100 on landing in Africa and gets a job flyng 707s for a British charter airline. Nearly all of the book is set on the flightdecks of jets, and also involves an American DC8 captain who is havng an affair. There are a couple of other crashes, and title comes frm the final sequence where the British 707 and US DC8 collide over Toronto but both remain airborne. As well as action and suspense (and every technical detail is perfect), it is also very funny in places.

I have a copy I have read dozens of times. It's a great book. Just down the road from my current temp job is a second hand bookshop and they have a copy. I will buy it (for about 20p) and send it postage-free to anywhere in the world, to the winner of my little competition.

You have to write a poem (minimum of four lines) about how much you love Airliners.net. It doesn't have to rhyme or anything. Add them to this thread. I await your lyrical waxing with bated breath. Ha ha hee!

I now have the item in question. May I say I'm quite disappointed, I thought you guys were made of sterner stuff, that there would be dozens of sonnets on here by now, rhyming "Airbus vs Boeing" with "to Airliners.net I am going" to snap up this very rare (only ever seen it once before in all my years of scouting 2nd hand bookshops for aviation stuff) and excellent book. Come on!

An excellent idea Cederjet! I've made the topic extra bold, hoping that will bring some attention to it!

Thanks Johan. I should add that I have just noticed that 1stClassFlyer made a brave stab with the following, found at the bottom of the 'Addicted To Airliners.net' thread:

Airliners.net
People, photos, forums
Airliners.net.

Wow. I feel choked with emotion. I think he really summed up how we all feel. In the absence of any other entries, we may have a winner. Anyone else want to have a go at acquiring Spencer Dunmore's classic and impossible-to-find piece of jet age literature?

I am not very good at writing poems, or anything that has to do with writing english, just go look at my report card which came in the mail today  , but I'll have a go at this. (There should be a unhappy face icon just before this, but I have bad luck at everything so it probably isn't.)

Airliners.net, what a great site,
I visit you every night.
I put my textbooks away,
and spend hours here each day,
I am adicted to you, I bet
but how can I stay mad at you, airliners.net.

I am not sure how to spell adicted, but oh well.

I forgot to explain the meaning of my poem. I spend hours here daily, literally, so I never to my homework for school. My parents are mad at me because all my teachers wrote on my reoort card I need to try harder out of class, but I don't want to because I wouldn't be able to spend as much time here. I can't be mad at airliners.net for making my grades suffer, its just such a great site I can't stay away.

Oh yeah, the unhappy face appeared. I worked!

Okay...this is pretty lame, but I couldn't resist. I present to you now, my Ode to airliners.net:

It was love at first site
The moment I logged on that night.
I found the ultimate distraction,
And now it’s Airplane pics that bring me complete satisfaction.

For months I have been torn,
Do I surf Airliners.net or porn?
I only have so much time to spare,
I must choose the better of the pair.

Oh, Johan
Looky what you’ve done.
You’ve completely captured my mind,
And tore it away from a woman’s behind.

I come here for my fix,
Oh admin, please accept my pics!
Now I’m beginning to fret,
I’m addicted to you, Airliners.net

Airliners.net

To airliners this i say,
You completely complete my rather long day,
With pictures and forums and news galore,
What could i want? Nothing more...

I come home and log on the net,
Will airliners come up? This i fret...
And when it does, a sigh of relief,
This has become my online sanctuary

Pictures of planes outside and in,
IM on here so much you might think it a sin!
Homework is never, ever done
But i stay here anyway my heart you have won

So in conclusion i want you to know
from your fabulous page i will never go
and when i am in the forums to talk about aviation with others
You get more attention then my dear little mother!

hehe,ok so i am finished

In was a cold October night,
My parents where away,
So I got on my PC and started to play,
I went online in search of breasts,
But what I found was the best,
It had photos which made it the perfect nest,
I wish I could caress it like a playboy models chest,
Airliners.net beats the rest!

I love it, after a sluggish start, these are exceeding my wildest expectations! Keep it up! And "Airbus vs Boeing" / "to Airliners.net I am going!", feel free to use it. Let it be part of a great and beautiful work of art!

I may have to dredge up more than one prize for this! Anyone heard of a novel called 'The Pilot' (mid 70s), the alcoholic DC8 captain who drinks on the job and has all manner of airborne terrors before having a spectacular crash on the runway? I may have two copies!

Keep 'em coming!

It was a few months ago,
and I knew it was so.

I clicked on the Forum
my sprits were soring.

Many people like me,
it was plane to see.

So many topics,
That were not made without fiboroptics.

So much information was there,
had to pull out my hair.

Started going here every night,
and what a site.

To see so many people who loved avation,
and cant stand the train station.

People who would rater be at an airport.
with camras and sort.

taking pitures of the sky,
and wishing they could fly.

watiching airplanes soring,
never gets boring.

people who love there airline and job,
just makes me want to sob

We some times get at each others throat
but we are in the same boat

as avation lovers,
we are just like brothers

Thank you airliners.net
for you are number 1, i bet

for bringing enthusests together,
through good and bad weather.

It has pictures of planes in the air and on the ground,
They have a chat room that is the best,
And the forum that never rests,

I was coming in to land,
But nothing for the next day was planned.

I went to check my mail,
And what I found was a trail.

There was a light, a landing light,
It was awfully bright.

It led me to place,
And when I found it you should have seen my face.

The place was called airliners.net,
If you want to learn about aviation go there and you will be set.

There are pictures many 747’s,
and even some of a 1-11’s.

Their pictures are so vast,
And with an 800MHz connection it is fast.

The have a chat room there,
With other enthusiast that really care!

The forum is never at rest,
And your questions are answered by best.

There is a news section too,
The purpose of that is to inform you.

If you have ever thought about a plane,
This site is right down your lane.

I was going to judge these myself, mainly cos I thought there would be, like, three lame entries and that would be that. But you guys are really good (note that I have not attempted anything myself)!! I am going to need more than one prize, and a lot of postage! I have about three favourites, but if anyone else can voice an opinion I would love to hear from you. Reading through, there are a couple of lines that nearly bring a tear to the eye - check these out:

I am addicted to you, I bet
But how can I stay mad at you, Airliners.net

We may get at each other's throat
But we are all in the same boat

Thank you for bringing enthusiasts together
Through good and bad weather.

I have an idea for a way of making ALL these into something really useful and cool, but I need to think it through a little. If in the meantime you want to influence the judge's decision, correspondence will gladly be entered into. And keep 'em coming if any of you have anything to add.

An Ode to the page I visit
To the website that takes up my time
But in my heart all is right for I was made for flight
and Airliners.net makes it mine.

Here is a home for the many
who enjoy a gift for the few
We would rather be closer to heaven
than stuck down in traffic below

Whether you hate Logan or love Kai Tak
This is the place you should roam
Every night, every day, the world is one step away
on Airliners.net, our home!

Sometimes we dont all get along
On this site it takes all different types.

Some like Delta, some American, Some TWA
Others Virgin Atlantic or Good old B.A.
Some like the turboprops with shimmering wings
Others like widebodies with personal tv's

Whether we like Airbus or Boeing
On one thing we all can agree
To Airliners.net we'll be going
For all of the airplanes to see!

If you're hungry for talk
Or if you have a question
There's no better place to ask than
Our airline discussions!

Is there something on your mind?
Put these marvels to the test!
Faster than a shuttle flight
they'll have the answer to your quest.

If there's news in the air
Before they find the black box
You'll see the story printed here
for the flight loving flock.

So if flying is your passion
Make youself at home
And we hope that you'll come back again

Unless you're Frank Lorenzo!

I am still a young boy learning my ways,
and I can still remember that wonderful day...

I was searching for photos it wasn't easy for me,
when I found Airliners.net I realized how easy it could be

In the forums the people with their knowledge, I am grateful,
They help out my brain when I am forgetful.

The photos and links are simple and clear,
I hope I remember them when I am taking my ATP exam in 20 years.

After long flights I'll want to take a snooze,
but instead I will visit Airliners.net for some jokes or the news.

When I am old and in my death bed,
I'll think about all of these wonderful people and what they all said.

"Stay in school and don't let all the tests give you a fright, just drop by Airliners.net for companionship every night."
