Not so unusual. LH has flown the 747 into Newark (-200) for a long time. Usually, the Munich and Dusseldorf flights were operated with the A340 and the Frankfurt flight was a 747-200.
Fedex has lots of DC10's serving Newark. They use Newark more than any other New York Area airport and have a large operation there.
ATA has flown to Newark for some time and recently expanded with flights to Chicago/Midway.
Eva Air of Taiwan flies several times a week from Newark to Taipei via Vancouver, late at night, using the 747-400 and along with Singapore Airlines and until September 11th, MAS, the only other Asian airline to service Newark.

Continental
There were plenty of the fedex planes there (727s and DC10s) but i had never seen one in motion. it was rigt behind us in taxiing and we actually passed him.
Milldoh-
1. Usually the DHL plane is parallel to the tpk
2. It was by the continental hangar right infront of a 777 (it really showed how small the 707 was!)
3. I didn't know they flew to the east

U2's Elevation tour 727 was parked in front of Signature aviations hangar on Sunday (it's probably still there), you can't see it though from the airside because it's behind the new Port Authority Administration building being built.
EWR is a huge hub for Fed Ex, EWR is the largest entry point for packages into their system. UPS has a big presence at EWR too, two of the seven frequencies to China UPS was recently awarded are for direct flights from EWR-Beijing and Shanghai with 747s.

1. Not anymore Every time I've seen it in the past few months, it's been facing NJT. Maybe we go at different times? Maybe it's parallel when loading / unloading?
2. Yep, that's where I saw it, too. You can get real close from the Virgin cargo lot - about 15 meters.
3. They fly to LGA, too. But use mostly MD-80's on that route. What service!!
Also, I think I heard LH was cutting their EWR routes for a while. I sure hope not, as I would LOVE to see the LH 346 when they're delivered. Believe they will replace the 742's.
