While I was in Hong Kong the other day I noticed a South African Airways 747-100/200. I have to admit that except for Northwest, I haven't seen too many of these series(es) flying around. Then I was reminded about an article that I read a few years ago about an SAA order for 777. I assume that they have cancelled this order?? If it is for sure, given what they are flying into HKG it would appear that they might be in the market for an upgrade in this area. Does anybody have any information regarding SAA and their fleet plans??

Yes I think it was back in 1995 SAA had an order for some 772ER's. I'm not sure about how many though. Then when Coleman Andrews came into the scene, these orders were cancelled because, according to something I read, "we did not need them".
However, news has been going around lately that SAA is looking for new long hauls to replace their 742's. There is much speculation as to whether they'll go Boeing or Airbus. I personally think they'll order 777's again though, because it just wouldn't make sense (at least in my mind) to have A340's/A330's flying alongside B744's and B738's.
By the way, you saw a 747-200 in HKG. SAA has never had 747-100's.
