According to a newspaper, an SIA plane was to be hijacked in Kathmandu and crashed in New Delhi. Security tightened at the Airport.
Why are so many bad things happening to SIA now.

Someone posted a similar post some hours ago but it was deleted. Why?

anyway I don't see the significance of crashing an SIA plane in India. I doubt Bush knows where Singapore is!

Hi

I don't think this was a real threat. Why SQ and what has Singapore done. Also if Bin Laaden were to order a plane to be crashed into Delhi the world would take notice but not as much as if they did into an american, european or british city.

I totally agree. What's the point of hijacking a Singaporean or SIA plane especially since there is little significance as compared to if they'd hijacked some American or British plane. As DocPepz said, doubt Bush even knows where Singapore is. And for that matter, most Americans haven't the foggiest idea as to where Singapore is anyway.

Actually, Bush met Goh Chok Tong....(I think!)

Anyway, yes it was a hoax as the Times of India reported. Where is Jiml1126's post???

Ah. I have the article...

'Osama threat on Delhi a prank'
The Times of India; Nov 10, 2001
BY BISHESHWAR MISHRA

NEW DELHI: The home ministry on Friday issued instructions for high alert around all airports, the Prime Minister's House, the American embassy and the US ambassador's house, following a tip-off from Chennai that terrorists may hijack a Singapore Airlines flight from Kathmandu to Delhi and use it as a missile to target these places.

"We have called for high alert and undertaken the usual drill of tightening security around airports and taken steps packaged as counter measures for hijacking and other contingencies," a senior home ministry official told The Times of India on conditions of anonymity.

From intelligence inputs available here, the official said the tip-off about possible hijacking, however, "appears to be the work of a prankster".

Reportedly faxed messages had been sent from Chennai to some senior officials here and officials at several airports and other places.

"In this charged atmosphere nothing can be taken lightly," a senior official said. However, experts dealing with such sensitive information said they were "90 per cent certain" that the tip-off was a hoax, meant to cause panic and confusion.

According to AFP, in Kathmandu, Nepal imposed strict security around the international airport on Friday after receiving information that a cell linked to Osama Bin Laden was planning to hijack a Singaporean airliner and crash it into New Delhi, officials said.

Singapore doesn't have aircraft carriers plus cruise missiles  Smile That's why they wanna pick it. It is also a symbol of a multi-racial society.

If SQ was crashed into New Delhi by a bunch of terrorist, the whole region would destabilise as India is criticising Pakistan very heavily on its support to the Islamic "freedom fighters" in Kashmir.

The concern is there, the hoaxer knew the seriousness of his prank call!

This hijacking attempt, had it been real, was targeted against India, not America or Britain. The people who are trying to mess up a part of India (Kashmir) are the same ones who messed up Afghanistan and NYC, to put it simply. Al Qaida.

I take extreme offense to the statements of Docpepzi and expecially of Carmy.

I challenge Carmy to name more than 5 Americans that he has met in his entire life and to state whether or not he made certain that they truly hadn't "the foggiest idea as to where Singapore is anyway."

Aer Lingus:

You don't have to take offence. Singapore IS an obscure country(as far as America is concerned) so I don't blame Americans for not knowing where Singapore is.

You asked me to name 5 Americans who don't know where Singapore is. Since I live here, the Americans I meet here obviously know where they are(I certainly hope they do!), so it's quite difficult to name 5 Americans in Singapore who don't know where Singapore is

However, I've been to the USA a few times, to both the East and West coasts as well as the midwest. More than once, and certainly more than 5 times, I've been asked by people where I was from (be it the shop assistant, receptionist or just friendly people at the bus stop)And when I respond "Singapore", some think it's in China, others think it's in Indonesia. Some asked me if I escaped civil war. Of course, some knew exactly where Singapore was.

Oh and the immigration officer at Niagara Falls didn't know that Singapore was under Visa waiver and kept quering my friend who didn't have a visa.

And I have perfectly no problems with that. They're not familiar with Singapore the same way I'm not familiar with Central Africa since I don't come from there, it's really far away and have very little contact with Central Africans.

Anyway, the scope of this forum doesn't extend to whether or not Americans know where Singapore is, so perhaps you would like to start a thread in the non-aviation forum and continue from there?
