The Italian franchise division of British Airways (National Jet Italia) shutdown yesterday afternoon due to financial and short-term cash trouble.
This airline was a mix between a low-cost and full service carrier, cause they offered low cost fares with British Airways cabin service.
The airline was owned by National Jet and with a small share by BA, but they flew in BA livery as franchise carrier.
Their hub was Rome FCO and they flew from there to Palermo, Catania, Genoa, Verona, Milan LIN, Athens and Nice. They flew 2 B737/400 plus some BAe 146/300.
After the 11 Sept. crisis they dropped Athens and Nice and grounded the 2 B737/400. But after the short-term cash problem they had to ground the entire fleet. Passenger were rebooked on others airlines.
In the last time the competition in the Italy domestic market began very strong and some small carriers died.
The leader is still Alitalia, but Meridiana, AirOne, AlpiEagles and Volare are really hard competitor.
Most of the competition take place on the flights between the two main Italian island (Sicily and Sardegna) and Milan/Rome.
