12-5-99 National Airlines Flt 306
B757-200 (N521NA)

Checked in at LAX Terminal 6. We used National's service which allows it's passengers to check their luggage straight to the hotel (if you are staying at either the Rio or Harrah's). This meant we did not have to go to the carousel at McCarran once we arrived. Our luggage met us at the hotel about an hour after we got in.

Flight left on time. Flight was a quick 35 minutes. The airplane was pretty ratty inside to say the least. This particular airplane is a used lease and has seen many flying hours. Snack was peanuts and soft drinks. The tail and engines on this airplane were painted a medium purple instead of the usual black paint. I asked a flight attendant about the paint color and she said the plane came back from the paint shop with the wrong colors, but the airline could not send it back because it was already scheduled for service. National calls this plane the "Barney Blue." Eventually, the plane will go back for the correct paint. Has anyone shot this plane?

12-8-99 National Airlines Flt 11
B757-200 (N545NA)

Checked in our luggage at the National Flight Center inside the Rio Hotel before we left for the airport. Arrived at the airport and went straight to Gate D2.
This airplane was brand new and was perfect.

Flight left on time. Winds were heavy, so we took off from the runway which parallels the Las Vegas strip. Again, quick flight to LAX. Snack was pretzels and soft drinks. Parked at Gate 61. Went down to the carousel and our luggage was there. The National Flight Centers work! Use them if you can!

Very obervant!
Not many people would notice a slight color change on the airplane, but I would also notify a flight attendant should I notice something unusual about the plane. Thanks for telling us about your trip.

When you say the plane was "brand new and perfect" and it was a 737-200, um, they haven't made -200s for almost 15 years. You must mean "clean and well maintained".

There is no such thing as a brand new 737-200

Bruce, National flies 757-200s as NAL757 pointed out. Four of their aircraft were delivered in '99, so it could very well be possible he was on a very new aircraft.

Now, I have a few questions for NAL757:

1) This "Barney Blue" plane--just how Barney Blue is it and is it just the tail? Was the interior not the standard NAL interior? Do you have the reg #s for tha aircraft you were on?

2) How was the actual inflight service? Were they crabby or were they generous and helpful?

3) How full were your flights?

4) I've heard good things about NAL--how would you rate them on a scale of 1-10 compared to Southwest and America West?

Thanks

Thanks for clearing that up 242. I think I said 757. I'll have to check again. Here are the answers to your Q's.

1. It actually looks like the same shade of purple that the Barney dinosaur is colored. She called it blue though. I talked to some people on the SkyOne mailing list who have shot pictures of this plane. They say you cannot tell the difference in a picture. The "Barney Blue" color is where the black normally is on a National plane. The engines and the tail.

The used airplanes have royal blue cloth seats with a medium purple leather head rest. The new plane that I flew on had royal blue, all cloth seats with multi colored triangles all over. Really nice looking actually. The registration numbers on the outbound were N521NA (this is the Barney plane) and the return was on N545NA, the brand new plane.

2. The inflight service on National is great. The F/A's are always smiling and very helpful. I have flown on National 3 times and have not seen a crabby F/A yet. The snack was basic because the flight from LAX to LAS is so short.

3. My first flight about 3 months ago was completely sold out, but that was on a friday night after people got off work. My outbound this time was about 80% full and the return was about 60% full. National is really having incredible success with their route choices and I hear LAX is their slowest market. Great news for a new airline.

4. If they refurbish the older planes, National will be on a scale way above Southwest. Inflight service is was puts them above. I have flown Southwest, but not AWA. I have a flight from ONT-PHX on AWA in March, so I really can't rate them now.

I hope these answers helped. If you have anymore questions, let me know!
