My Last Cadet Flight

Well, today I took my very last flight in the Purdue Cadet. I flew 1.1 hours frokm Lafayette to Flora, IN, a great grass strip where we did about a dozen trips around the pattern, then back into Lafayette. My instructor and I had a great time, but alas I will never get to fly the Cadet again. Next semester I move up to the Piper Arrow (PA28R-201), and after that our training fleet will be replaced with Warrior IIIs so that even if I instruct here next year the Cadets will be gone.

As a side note, I took a couple of written tests this week. I got a 90 on the instrument rating exam and a 93 on the CFII test. Next up is Instrument Ground Instructor, which I will probably do tommorrow.

Congrads on the Instrument exam and the CFI2 exam!!!   I didn't know you were going for instructor ticket... that's really great! Perhaps you can be my instructor when I finally get my PPL!   And I thought that getting my driver's license was hard.

I think that PPI is going to try to take hold of one of Purdue's Cadets. If we do, you can rest assured that the aircraft will really begin to show it's age!

Good luck on that Instrument Ground Instructor test... tell me how it went.

Thanks, Neil. I'm doing 253 next semester, which will get me my commercial certificate and instrument rating, so I plan on getting my CFI/CFII over the summer.

I'm sure you tried your best on your checkride - you'll do great next time. If you think that's bad, listen to this... I still don't have a driver's license. I have something that looks like one, but it's really just a California State ID card. Larry thought that was soo funny when he gave me my checkride last year and I had to tell him that, contrary to what he wrote on the FAA forms, the ID he saw was not a DL!

That's too funny! Ha!

I guess you don't need one to get around in that city of yours. I think that a car in LA wouldn't accomplish much except getting you stuck in gridlock.

I wish now I could change my senior prophesy to read "In 10 years Neil Harrison will have earned his PPL"

The thing that gets me all the time whenever I tryout for something is my fear of failing. I try to do everything perfectly to impress the person and all I manage to do is screw it up in the process.

It's disappointing nonetheless, but it's never the end of the world. Even if it was, I could go down to Mexico or Russia and get my license there and apply for the FAA conversion license.

So Neil,

What happened on your checkride? We were all wondering since you told us that you were going for it, but you never posted the results. Checkrides generally have a high failure rate so you are certainly not alone. There are more PHDs in this country than PPLs. That should say something.

I'm sorry pilot113, I just hadn't read far enough down in the topics. Don't worry about it. The Red Baron CRASHED THREE AIRPLANES while soloing. All pilots make mistakes. Do you know a better way to really really learn something?

I am also working on my PPL, but just started so I haven't taken any tests or stuff like that. I am not sure of the driving age of all places, but over here in the UK it is 18. I can get my PPL in a few years when I am 17, until then I just keep flying with an instructor. Does any one else find it weird that I can legally fly alone before I am even alowed to drive? I can't even drive my self to the pilot center I am taking lessons at, I have to have one of my parents drive out with me and just sit around til i am finished an hour later. If I get a ppl in England, can I use it while I am in the US?

AA737, I take your point about being able to fly before you can dirve in the UK but aren't the ages 16 for flying and 17 for driving? I knew a couple of people who got their PPLs through the ATC while they were at school and weren't allowed to learn to drive.
