The first version, the B1, made its maiden flight in 1972, and the B2, the first production A300, entered service in 1974.
The aircraft that crashed was an A300-605R, a variant which is an advanced version of the original A300. This specific aircraft, N14053, was delivered new to AA on June 13th 1988.

Hope that helps.

How many passengers can they hold?

Isn't the A300-600 that "fat-guppy cargojet"?

Is that a German passenger specification because they can have as many as 361 passengers in the case of Monarch. Remember we British like to squeeze people in our charter aircraft.

David/MAN: 254 and counting

No, the A300-600 (or A300B4-600/A300B4-600R, to put it correctly) are the normal pax planes; the Super Transporters are their derivatives, "A300B4-608ST".

A300B4-200 can have as many as 336 pax, and
A300-600R can fit, as David_itl says, 361 pax.

I actually didn´t find numbers for the -600; I assumed B4-200 and B4-600 to have the same number of pax, given their identical outer dimensions. My bad - thanks for correcting it, David.

It's not such a big mistake! I have a feeling that many British passengers would prefer to have "only" 336 seats on board!

I have flown on Air Scandic A300B4-200 NCL-TFS-NCL with 317 seats (all full BTW), But the a/c had a big gap in seats as it seemed there was a front cabin and a back cabin (from the days when the a/c was with Finnair), and I flew MON A300-600R MAN-TFS-MAN with 361 seats. I found both flights pretty comfortable.

I have done MON A300-600R from MAN to TFS 4 hours 30 (rtn) and MAN to Rhodes 4 hours 10(rtn) and it was VERY cramped.
The seating is 3-3-3 and if you are sat in the middle seat, you have to wait for the outer people to finish eating before you can start!!!!
nice smooth a/c though
