It's quite interesting to talk about VARIG and their 747's. You know in the beggining of the 70's there was a great competition in South Atlantic flights between Portugal and Brazil, at that time TAP was using the 707 agains the Varig 707 too, that when the wide-body era came TAP ordered the 747 and Varig stayed in the DC-10 for a while, then in 1980 or so Boeing had 3 747-2L5 Combies that where supposed to go to Lybian Arab Airlines but never did, so those ones came to Varig and for the first time VARIG had the Jumbos, then TAP sold the 747's to TWA and bought the L1011-500, VARIG used the DC-10 and 747 to Portugal, then they changed to the 767-200 and TAP started with the A310-300, then VARIG used for a while the 767-300 and the MD11 and TAP sold the L1011-500 and started with the A340-300.
No, I don't believe that we'll ever see a 747 in Varig colors. Although, it would be really nice if it ever happened again.
The 747 is just too outdated for Varig's brand spanking new 777. The 777 has around the same capacity as the 777 and can fly more cargo. The 777 when compared to the 747 is a lot more profitable and economical than a large 747.
The 747 did it's job well for Varig during the 80's and 90's but now the star of fleet is 777.
