Hey guys!

Phillippine Airlines was about to go bankrupt in 1998. At the end, they managed to sort everything out with the Trade Unions and PAL was saved!

I remember that Cathay Pacific had plans to take over Phillippines Airlines. What happened to the deal? How come CX did not buy PAL at the end?

And are they still interested in PAL? I guess PAL is on its own and they are doing alright........

Comments?

So are they still interested in PAL?

And by the way, how many planes does PAL have?

CX are probably only interested in weathering the current crisis...........

about 5 ex-CX managers went to work as consultants for PR at that time to try and turn PAL around but eventually left.

Air NZ got 1 747-4F6 in 98' and South African got 2 all 3 were going to PAL. They have a total of around 7 747's plus some A330 and A340's, do they have any narrowbodies?  Smile

if memory serves rightly, CX where said to be involved in a management contract. those discussions fell through as PAL was seen as something of a basket case (my reading between the lines).

these days i doubt very much that CX would want to go through the trouble again. PAL is really only a domestic market play for CX and thus limited appeal. CX has a good international network, why weigh it down with the additional burden? if CX were to ever consider it seriously (a buyout) then it would have to be at a serious discount. not sure that Lucio Tan (current chairman and major shareholder) would want to do that unless it was obvious it was going down the tubes and no govt $$$ were forthcoming.
