I have a ticket on Delta for tomorrow night, am I allow to show up for an afternoon flight and fly standby (if they have room)?

Yes u are if u go on the flight that goes to the same place they will put u on stand by and ull get on if theres room left

I work for Dl, if you need to know the standby availability for the flight you want to go standby for, give me the day and flight number and I will tell you what the actual and authorized availability is.
