The DC-9 is by far one of the best. 737-200 is awsome also. Nothing like hearing those engines go to full power, the ground shakes, your ears blow. Ah. What a great feeling

As I live next to the airport, the best sound of a jet engine is when it is shut off!But if you guys like noisy engines try Russian aircraft. The car alarms go off and windows shaking when a Ilyushin or a Tupelov takes of at night.

A C-5 takes the cake for me. But the F/A-18 comes in a very close second, thats if you havent covered your ears before its gone by.
As for commercial. I love the F.28-4000 on take off. The distinct "twang" type noise you hear at a certain power setting is great. Then it is just followed by a roar and rumble. I just love Speys, what can I say...

747-400, not only because it's my favorite aircraft, it's perfectly balanced, awe-inspiring, even 1-2 minutes after take-off. In the summer I often sit on my balcony and watch the fat birds take off from FRA. Even before you see 'em coming you can hear it: A deep but not unpleasant roar, a very fat sound, bass frequencies that hit the spot, not shrill, like music. I love it and for me there's no other aircraft that comes even close (Concorde is sheer power, very loud but somewhat "old-fashioned in sound", if you know what I mean).
Regards
Andreas

SUDDEN:
My point is, the question was "which jet sounds the best", and some people are just listing aircraft types, instead of the one they think sounds best at take off.
IMO the 757 using the RR engines sounds the best - this doesnt mean that I dont respect everyone elses opinions....just be nice to have one rather than 20 a/c.
I never said that the 757 sounded "nice" to the rest of you - where did you get that Idea?
Dont you think that that was the intention of the thread?

I thought witches flew on broomsticks?
25 Boeing nut: ALL OF THEM!!!!!!!! Jet sounds are not, repeat NOT, noise pollution!!!!!!!!
26 DaV: Tu154. It has a tonality that you can feel totally in your stomach, more than other... I love it! But they are pretty rare visitors at my home airport
27 TWA717_200: The DC-10. And that's the only thing I love about the DC-10.
28 Flaps: A fully loaded L1011 on a maximum performance takeoff.
29 Sushka: I like the screaming of old Russian beuties like the Tu134
30 Schreiner: A340 or 777..., 747-200 sounds also cool
37 Runway: Lear 24 (louder than any 37!)and the VC-10 ,both very loud, but the nicest sound comes from 767-300 with the big GE's.
38 IAHERJ: Any JT8 powered aircraft particularly the DC-9. I love the noise and the smoke. The high bypass engines just don't do it for me but I'll half to adjus
39 Pinsent: IL62 Hands Down! The nice whine of the taxi out, and the roar of the take off brings back fond memories of 1980's CYQX! AHHHHH!
