747 Classic Withdrawl

Cathay Pacific is going to withdraw from service its 6 strong fleet of 747-300 by the end of next year. They are going to try and sell the aircraft. Their 747-200 is also being with drawn. Two of the 747-200s will be leased to Virgin Atlantic and three others will be wet leased to Iberia for 5 years. They are also thinking of selling their 777-200s.

I knew that they were going to phase out the Boeing 747-200 and 300. We all know that airlines are progressively retirering their classic Boeing 747's. There was absolutely no reason for them to sell their B777-200 without eliminating their B747-200/300's.
So the Cathay Pacific fleet should soon consist of the following:
Airbus A330 and A340
Boeing 747 (400 only)
Boeing 777 (300 only)
I heard it's an excellent airline.

I'm kinda glad Cathay is getting rid of it's 777's. Those planes suck, just think, I would want to fly on a huge widebody powered by only 2 engines with only 3 sets of landing gear. I think that isn't very safe.

It is so advance technology it does not need any more. If it had 16 wheels on a plane that big I think you would complain aswell

I'm glad Cathay is getting rid of their 777's. Those planes suck, Just think, Who would want to fly on a huge widebody powered by only 2 engines and had only 3 sets of landing gear. I wouldn't want to fly on it.

Still It is new I would rather fly on a new 777 2 engine wide body 3 sets of wheels then a 40 year old 747! But really I don't care I am NOT afraid of flying at all.

With the phaseout of the 747 Classics and the 777-200, Cathay's fleet composition will seem more rational. It was just a matter of time anyway. Getting the 777-200 and A330 never made sense in the first place. The 777-200 and A330 have overlapping functions, as do the 747 Classics and the 777-300.

CX is also thinking of buying a 40% stake in Philippine Airlines. PAL has the 747-400, A340 and A330 in its fleet. While PAL still operates the older 747-200 and A300B4, these are supposed to be replaced by the newer aircraft. It also means that for the most part both airlines will have compatible wide-body aircraft. PAL also operates the 737-300, A320 and Fokker 50 on domestic routes.
