Why Does Southwest Use WN?

I'm not sure about the origin of WN, but I'm pretty sure why it's not SW. When Southwest started in 1971, SW was used by Seaboard World, an all-cargo airline that merged with Flying Tiger around 1980 or so. SW is now being used by Air Namibia.

The SW code was not used by Seaboard. It was used by Air Namibia's predecessor, South West Airways, which was founded in 1946. Got the info from Air Namibia's website. My apologies for the misinformation.

Just FYI, Southwest was not always WN. When they initially began operating in June '71...and for maybe a year thereafter, they were OE.

The WN has nothing to do with Herb, "We're Nuts"...or anything like that. When WN became the two letter code Herb was still the lawyer and M. Lamar Muse was still president/CEO of Southwest. It was the mid-80s before Herb Kelleher got even vaguely involved in the operational end of the air carrier and by that time WN had been WN for at least a dozen years.
