I have to questions here, usually on boeing and airbus planes i notice that the left side wing has a red light and that the right side wing has a green light.. but on MD-80's i notice that both of the wings has white lights on them... ain't the color of these lights regulated by certain laws, like if they should be green or red? like why is it on boeing and airbus that they are going under the same rule that the left wing has red light at the edge and that the right wing has a green light, while that is not the case on Md-80's?
Second concern is, the wing blinking lights, now i know that the belly and the roof lights of the planes means operating aircraft, but i was on a british Airways flight to london, and i was seated beside a window seat, i noticed that the blinking light wasnt operated until after we where pushed back from the gate in Dubai and after the engines started after push back. so when is this light supposed to be operated? before pushback or after and does it stay blinking all of the flight? i wasnt able to observe at night because on every red eye flight on a 777 they ask us to lower the windowshades.

At ual red light(Becon) means live acft (eng, hyd, moving acft, cleared to push etc.) usually the White light (strobes) come on are turned on when they are cleared to takoff and remain on untill they clear the runway at the destination.

The MD-80's have those red and green lights, also known as NAV lights.
All ships and aircraft are required to have these, Red meaning the left side, or port and green the starboard, or right hand side.
They help other pilots identify in what position the other aircraft is in, what direction its heading etc.
These lights must always be illuminated when the aircraft is running.

There are 2 types of lights on the wing, the position and the strobes. All airliners have them!
The strobes will not be turned on until you are on the runway, and are turned off as soon as you are off the runway. This is just to make the plane more visable. These will be turned off (with the beacon, even though you are not meant to) when flying in clouds, as it is distracting.
The nav lights (red and green on the wing, and a white one on the tail) will be turned on at night as you start to taxi (I think [I have not flown at night in about a year]). These are used so other pilots can see which direction you are going in.

Nav lights are on all the time, taxi only during taxi, landing during takeoff and landing, and strobes when not in clouds so as not to cause spatial disorientation. Also beacon lights- which are used all the time.
