On my way up to the Giants game (blech) today, we noticed a 747 on short final to 22L as we neared the airport. I assumed it was a either LH or VS, as the SQ 744 was already on the ground. We got closer, and the aircraft appeared to be dark gray, and upon closer inspection was indeed a United 747-400. Soon after passing the airport, a UA 777-200 presented itself on approach. I was curious as to what they were doing at EWR. Anyone on the forum have any insight? Perhaps IAD wx-related diversions?

BTW, this occured at about 12 noon ET.

I don't know, but I saw it taking off around 2 - 2:30 and thought it was odd.

Damn Giants!  Big grin

I don't know about the UA 747 but on Saturday I saw a Hawain DC-10 parked near CAL's new cargo building. It's possibly a charter for some North East Universities competing in Maui invitational, I know Seton Hall was there.

Maybe it was an upsize due to the holidays. A few days ago UA upsized the DEN-IAD-DEN trip from a 777 to a 744 because of higher pax loads. It couldn't have been an IAD diversion, cause we didn't have diversions happening until after 17:00 today. Also, currently the only UA 744 sked for IAD is the arrival from LAX around 16:00, and it departs back for LAX at 17:45.

Yes, I did see that same aircraft yesterday at EWR. I was heading down to the baggage claim after a hopping off a shuttle from BOS and saw the 744 in question. I was at Terminal C and saw a 747 on its way to Terminal A. I was a little confused as to what it was doing in EWR, since I don't remember any scheduled UA 747 flights to EWR since the SP's used to do the NRT runs back in the late 80s/early 90s.

I was going to take the monorail over to A and see what it was doing there, but I had to deliver some papers to my office before my colleague left at 1:30. I would be curious to see why the a/c was in.

Perhaps the 777 was doing the EWR-LHR run. I'm not familiar with that route, but I'd think it is generally operated by a 763. Anything is possible though. Plane changes do happen from time to time.

I love America. I guess that makes me Bush's poodle, but I'd rather be a dog in New York City than a prince in Riyadh.

For the past few years, United has been running a 777 on teh EWR-LHR run. In addition to that, they send the 777 to DEN from EWR too.

That's interesting, I would have thought that the route is operated by a 763. Like I said, I don't know too much about EWR-Europe flying.

UA flies the 777 EWR-LHR and AA flies the A-300 EWR-LHR.
