Just heard that they have laid off 30 Hong Kong based flight attendants. I guess this isn't too surprising, given that NW now only flys into HKG through Tokyo. Even before Sept 11th, they seemed to have cut their flights back quite a bit. Were they really doing that bad in their HKG-US flights?

With only one flight per day why have they cut staff ??.
I mean they have not cut the flight so did that mean they have too many crew or they are going to cut the number of F/A's on the flight ??

Perhaps they had excess staff from the days when they operated more flights out of HK. With routes in the US being cut, US based staff can now probably cover for the HK - Tokyo route.

I doubt if NW can cut the no. of FAs on board. They have hardly any service already!

I never fly with them, but from what i heard of them, they are cheap, and service is bad, and even can't compare to UA. but i just heard from someone, what do other people think of NW?

They have not had any other routes for years. As for service your not kidding. I had the joy of flying them HKG-TKY-LAX-SAN and SFO-THY-HKG. NEVER AGAIN.

NW does not have FA's based in HKG, only in NRT in Asia.

Other FA bases are DTW, MSP, MEM, LAX, SEA, JFK, BOS, and SFO.

There is a rumor about opening a small FA base in AMS as well.

All of NW's flight attendants in asia are foreign nationals. The bases in Asia are not open to US flight attendants. NW signs a contract with those flight attendants for a year or two. NW has 5 bases in Asia for F/As. All flights south and west of NRT must have 2 US based flight attendants on board. The Purser and a regular cabin attendant. The rest of the crew is made of a combination of F/As from other asia bases. NW's US bases are DTW, MSP, MEM, BOS, NYC, SEA, SFO, LAX and HNL. NW does have language speakers in a lot of foreign cities but they do not act as flight attendants. NW is in the process of language qualifing US flight attendants which means an end to the foreign national interpretuers on board the aircraft. That maybe who got laid off.

NW service is better than UALs, but not as good as Delta's.

I think that NW's service on flights is far better than United's. I have flown on United twice in my life--NEVER AGAIN!!!

What were NW's HKG routes? At what time did they operate the most daily flights? I know of MSP, LAX, and SEA flights to HKG. Did they have DTW and/or SFO as well? How long did these flights last? Thanks!

With a user name like Nwa747-400 I would not expect anything else !!

On my flight with NW the staff just seemed like they did not give a *%&$ about the customers. Same goes for United. My flights on Delta did seem to be better.

Northwest only fly NRT - HKG - NRT. Thats it. They did try SEA and MSP but they both failed badly.

Northwest cargo do much better in Hong Kong, upto two or three per day.

You've got to change planes at NRT.

NW did fly HKK to SEA and transferred the route to MSP. The new service lasted less than a year. Plans are to start DTW-HKK when the new terminal opens. Whenever that is. They also want to reinstate SEL. And I have talked with people who have flown UA to Asia and they didn't care for it. They commented that NW was much more friendly compared to UA's sky nazis.
