Can anyone tell me why Aeroflot replaced their IL-96's flying into LAX with 767-300's? I fought for a long time to get a photo of the 96 but never did. Always ran out of film the plane before it landed Or just missed it on the other side of hte airport

Yea lately I have just been seeing the 767. It disapoints me...It was neat to have a Russian plane standing among the other 747's and such at the international terminal. I remember the first IL-96-300 I saw. RA-96010 I think...
I saw it land on 24R ; It was really quiet! I then rushed over to the international terminal to watch it dock. Although at that time about 2 years ago I didnt take photos

I saw the IL-96 last week....i really don't see any ryhme or reason to which plane they dispatch on this route....sometimes it's the 767 others its the Illyshin...Who knows! But if you want to see it, it's sitting on the ground on the north side of the airport on the western remote terminal...it's there on the ground at 1.30 when i pass by on the way to work...but leaves several hours later...hope this helps

While I'm not sure of the official reason(if there is one, apart from maybe economics) I did read an article early this year in which it was mentioned that western built aircraft were being acquired and placed on important routes to try and win business class passenegers. Aeroflot felt that they were being by-passed by the important business paxs because of their Russian built aircraft, so B737's, B767's and B777's as well as the A310 (to a lessor extent) were placed on routes to America, Germay, England etc..
Now I know Russian aircraft do these routes as well, and that certain russian aircraft are just as well built etc...
but looking at it from ecomonic viewpoint, you have to see where Aeroflot are coming from
Hops this maybe helps a bit???

I am beggining to think that the Russians have a
complex problem regarding anything they built.
The West has always made them feel inferior in
every sence of the way. As far as the IL-96-300
to LAX, according to Aeroworld.net info. The 767
fuel consumption and maintnance cost are about equal. I hope Aeroflot takes the cost of leasing this aircraft into the equation.
