I was looking at the Delta seating arrangement on their 764's and noticed something rather bizzare. I always thought Delta's largest plane in terms of amount of passengers was the 777. However, their 764's seat 36+251 as opposed to 52+227 of the 777. I assume that this difference is attributed to having more first class seats and more room in the 777 as it is used on long haul routes. More surprising though, is that Continentals 764's seat 35+200. Here is where my questions come in. How is it that Delta can squeeze in 50 more seats on to their 764's. Also, for those who have flown on Delta's and Continetal's 764's, is there a noticable difference in seat space between the two airlines. Thanks

Never been on either (get the DL one this December), but I would guess that its because Continental uses them on international flights and, like DL's 777s, would have their special "Business Class" seats. Doing a little research, DL puts 39" of legroom in their FC seats while CO puts 55". You do the math. Both have 7 rows of first, but since DL can get about 2 more rows in X 7 seats per row plus DL seems to squeeze 2 FC rows where CO puts galleys and restrooms, plus maybe a slighly lower pitch on DL might work???? I know I'm not clear, sorry. Doesn't seem to make too much sense. I agree with you. Somebody???

Delta 777's have the Business Elite first class, which are larger and more widely spaced than the domestic first class found on 767-400's. In addition, the 777 has more first class seats than the 767-400. Though DL's 767-400's have more seats than their 777's, the 777's weigh more and have a larger cabin.
Btw, the coach sections in both aircraft are exactly the same in terms of the types of seats and their width/pitch.

Delta's 767-400 indeed has very limited legroom. The entire front cabin is a very strange configuration with at least four seats (1C&D and 2C&D) wedged in between the lav and the galley. The IFE is so wide that it takes up valuable seat width (First class seat width is 18.5", I believe) making it very uncomfortable for long flights. The 777s I have been on all have the Business Elite seats and are very comfortable. My understanding is that Delta is/has looked at changing the coach configuration on both pieces of equipment.

36 F/C 18.5" pax width @ 39" pitch
251 Y/C 17.7" pax width (average) @ 32" (predominantly) 4 pax at 33", and 42 pax at 31"
The E/C enhancement program is complete on ALL 764 aircraft (16 in fleet) and will be on the 5 deferred A/C. The F/C seat re-design is being put on hold at least until the new year based on financials, DL is still doing preliminary design work.
DL 777 Ships 7001, 7003-7007
52 B/C 21" pax width @ 60" pitch
227 Y/C 17.5" pax width predominantly at 32" with a few at both 31 and 33" pitch (sorry can't recal exact QTY's)
The E/C enhancement program is only being accomplished on 7002 while its currently in retrofit for overhead crew rest and 3x3x3 retrofit.
DL 777 Ship 7002
50 B/C 21" pax width @ 60" pitch
221 Y/C 18.2" pax width mainly at 33" with some at 32" (DL is looking at installing front row airbags to make the entire cabin at 33" pitch)
Only one plane will be accomplished with all remaining in-fleet plains put on hold due to financials. 7008 originally due to be delivered in March '02 has been deferred.
Its funny that someone mentions how cramped the first class 764 cabin is compared to 763ER BusinessElite seat in terms of seat width, but the 764 seat width is EXACTLY the same as the 763ER BusinessElite seat width. 18.5"!!!
However it is true the current 764 F/C seats are cramped, but its because of poor personal space allocation due to IFE box and center console design, as well as the businessElite cabin is PERCEIVED larger due to pitch! (i.e. more leg room/recline, yadda yadda yadda)
