Airtran MD90, MD80

I would love to see an Airtran MD80/90 come into my airport. If only they had them. Just think of those wonderful birds in Airtran Colors. Who here thinks Airtran should expand with MD90s and MD80s. PLEASE NO MORE 737s

I think the MD-80 would be a fine airplane for AirTran to invest in, it would allow them to carry more pax while still utilizing the "DC-9". I hope they will choose to one day operate the type.

I want them to launch the 717-300. It's common to what they operate, and cheaper than an MD-80. Of course, in it's time (1981 = 20 years ago) the MD-80 was very economical, but today we can do better. I wonder how the MD-80 stacks up to the less interesting yet newer 737-700?????

I want to see them maintain a DOUGLAS fleet. I hope they don't buy SunCountry, because I think that will undo them.

With many airlines grounding or retiring their MD-80s & MD-90s for new A320s or 737NGs, I am sure AirTran will have no problem getting some used MD-80s & MD-90s at a good price.

When I was an ops agent for Alaska Airlines I was always dealing with the fueling and fuel burn of the MD-80s and 737-200s and 400s. The 400 was the most efficient (they didnt have 700s or 900s when I was there) but not a whole lot more than the MD-80. On a typical nonstop FAI-SEA flight of approx 3hr 30 min, a 737-400 would burn about 20,000-26,000lbs of fuel; an MD-80 would burn 22,000 to 28,000 pounds of fuel. So, they are comparable. One thing to note, the MD-80 could carry more cargo/bags/mail than a 737-400 and it was MUCH to perform weight and balance on when full. So, sometimes when a 737-400 was at its MGTOW, it would be IMPOSSIBLE to get the CG within limits, however an MD-80 at MGTOW was impossible to NOT be within limits since the CG was soooooo wide. Just a note comparing the two!

Well, If they don't get 20 year old MD80s, I hope they get 5 year old MD90s. Which were AAs old planes which were built in 1996, and 1997. I WOULD LOVE TO FLY ON AN AIRTRAN MD90

The 5 year old MD-90's will be sitting broken while even the aging DC-9's (well, if they could survive flying for ValuJet, they can survive anything) push back and taxi around them.

Both the CEO and CFO have stated the airline is ACTIVELY seeking larger aircraft. One must assume in the current environment, that the carrier is seeking aircraft that will be compatible with it's current fleet (i.e. MD80s or MD90s). As for the 717-300, it may have more capacity (than the 712), but as it is designed with the same wing as the 717-200 it would do nothing to increase range for AirTran, which the airline also wants.

Looks for MD80s in the fleet within the next 6 - 8 months.

It's probably worth noting that prior to the Everglades crash, ValuJet operated MD-80s in addition to the DC-9s.

I would love to see AirTran aquire some Delta M90's in the near future, but I dont think that will happen.

I would like to see them operate 736's also but you dont want to hear that so I will shut up now  Smile

Lowfareair, This statement is why I hate CNN. They are trying to drive the passengers away. Who else in here hates CNN? They provide irrelevant information.
