Who's the biggest airline right now?

Is it still:

1. UAL
2. AA
3. DAL
4. NWA

I'm asking because recently, there were stocks in the newspaper and Delta's was a whopping $23 a share!! The others I listed were less than half of Delta's selling price. Is Delta #1 now?

If you want to go by market cap, then the answer is "none of the above". Southwest's market cap is more than DAL,AA,and UAL combined.

In terms of available seat miles, I believe the latest is:

1. AMR
2. UAL
3. DAL

DAL continues to actually fly the most people every year.

By industry standard, I think it is now AA because of their takeover of TWA. UAL is second, Delta third, NW fourth.

I think Delta's stock is higher because of the big four they are probably in the best shape!

Usually, "biggest" refers to available seat miles. After all the airlines reported their traffic for October, Southwest had passed US Airways to take the # 6 position. The rankings were:

1. American
2. United
3. Delta
4. Northwest
5. Continental
6. Southwest
7. US Airways

"Biggest" as in which airline is worth the most money (ie: Market Cap) are as follows:

1. Southwest 14.159 billion
2. Delta 3.458 billion
3. American 3.230 billion
4. Northwest 1.481 billion
5. Continental 1.264 billion
6. Skywest 1.263 billion
7. Atlantic Coast 906.3 million
8. United 888.3 million
9. Alaska 781.6 million
10. US Airways 493.2 million
11. Frontier 427.6 milion
12. AirTran 416.4 milion
13. Mesa Holdings 204.5 million
14. Midwest Express 166.0 million
15. Mesaba 140.0 million
16. ATA 138.9 million
17. America West 83.9 million
18. Hawaiian 79.6 million
19. Vanguard 8.2 million
20. Great Lakes Aviation 3.5 million

Keep in mind that an airline's market cap changes on a daily basis. It is computed by multiplying the current share price times the number of outstanding shares the company holds. Also, some airlines might be subsidiaries of holding companies that own other companies and all those companies are lumped together.

I forgot to mention that the above market cap figures were effective as of 12/03/2001 when the stock market closed. I got the info from Yahoo.

DC10Tony,
The price the stock is selling for has nothing to do with the size of the airline or any company.

Very true Bobnwa - look no further than Amazon.com - when it was trading for 5 times what General Motors was.
