Does anyone know why Virgin had a 763 operating in 1996, as depicted in this photograph? I came across this and was puzzled. Judging by the reg. number, I'm guessing it was some sort of short-term lease?

The aircraft was leased from Martinair to whom it was returned.

Couldn't find much else about it.

How funny, in the short period of time I spent looking for information, three people posted ahead of me. Sorry for the redundancy.

In August of 1997 my girlfriend flew on that aircraft, but on a Martinair flight with Martinair flight number and Martinair crew from MCO to AMS.
Seems MP used it in VS colours some time after VS had returned the aircraft!

It operated winter 1996 on the MAN-MCO service (think 1996 was the only year when the service operated all year round).

David_itl, didnt it operate the summer service that year as well.
The a/c was mostly used MAN-MCO.
LHR-MCO cannot be operated due to Bermuda II thing.

I didn't even know about the Bermuda I thing, let alone the Bermuda II thing. What is it?

GKirk

We had A340s in the summer, but they decided to operate clapped-out 747s in subsequent years due to the popularity of the route.

Wouldn't be surprised if the service became a year-round A340-600 service

It is Bermuda II currently in place right???
Oh yeah, I mind seeing an A340 in that summer actually.
I was getting on an Air Ops L1011 to TFS from T1 and seen a Virgin a/c.
Yeah, maybe thats why the 346 test flight went through MAN??

Bermuda II restricts destinations available from Heathrow to the US to about 12 destinations using 2 US airlines, 2 British airlines and the odd-balls of KU & AI; hence the likes of DL, CO and BD all want the agreement lifted.

Glad to say the rest of Britain is out this nonsense  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

The A340-600 flight made it onto the MAN website with them saying it was helping to test facilities available and that two airlines currently flying to MAN have ordered them so we might see them on a regular basis. Iremember how Air Ops operated some L1011s in the Hawaiian scheme!

So why is it called Bermuda II and not Heathrow regulation X or something like that?

I think the original agreement was drafted in Bermuda and so the amendment (circa 1978?) had "II" after it.
