I am planning to take a big trip in the summer of 2003, graduation! hehe. I was wondering what I could do to get the lowest fares possible. Should I go multiple leg? Well, here is my proposed itinerary.

Check into round the world and joint fare packages operated by some airlines........as good as the internet is, a travel agent in your case may have some answers, for example, using the special multi-carrier airpasses offered in south america. Buying point to point fares will be really expensive, and sometimes the flight search sites like travelocity and orbitz do not compute competitve fares on a multi-segment, complicated itinerary such as yours.
You will really have to do a lot of research to come up with a cheap or reasonable fare, I think, the STAR alliance may offer something (AC, LH, RG) and Lan Chile/Lan Peru for the south american flights. Get a list of toll free numbers and start calling.
Congradulations on your graduation and have a happy and safe trip.
