"Delta: History of an Airline," by W. David Lewis and Wesley Phillips Newton. Athens, GA: University of Georgia Press, 1979. 503 pages.

I was looking for a book on the history of airports in the United States, esp. California. I'm interested in getting a sense of the expansion of service to various airports over time. Anyone got a recommendation? I couldn't come up with anything good in the university library catalog when I tried various subject searches.

Anyone interested in the culture of commercial aviation? The book I absolutely reccommend to all of you plane freaks is:

airline
identity, design, and culture.

It has brilliant anecdotes and photographs on the craziness of airline fashion, food, interiors, and identity. I got this book off about two weeks ago and all I have to say is... WOW! The most fantastic photos of airline culture I have ever seen; from the jet set sixties uniforms (hubba hubba) to the extensive All Nippon Airways first class food pictures...not forgetting superb shots of Hugh Heffners Big Bunny, a superbly outfitted DC-9 bought NEW then.

Incredible book.

Some others all involving accidents:

Final Approach: The Crash of Eastern 212
William Stockton, 1977

This is one I read a long time ago about the crash of an Eastern Airlines plane in CLT in 1974.

The Last Nine Minutes: The Story of Flight 981
Moira Johnston, 1976

This is a book about the crash of the Turkish Airlines DC-10 in France back in the '70's

Freefall
41,000 Feet and Out of Fuel

William & Marilyn Mona Hoffer, 1989

This one's about Air Canada 143 which ran out of fuel and made an emergency landing at a deserted airport, whose runway was being used for drag races at the time. The aircraft was later nicknamed The Gimli Glider.

Fire and Rain: A Tragedy in American Aviation
J. G. Chandler, 1986

The crash and aftermath of Delta 191 at DFW on Aug. 2, 1985.

Sound of Impact: The Legacy of TWA Flight 514
Adam Shaw, 1977

This TWA flight had originated in IND, made a stop in CMH and was headed to DCA on December 1, 1974. National was closed due to a snowstorm and the flight was diverted to IAD. While approaching IAD, the plane crashed into a mountain (Round Mountain) at 1,800 ft and killed all 92 aboard. Lots of chapters with comments from families of the victims.

Clipper 806: The Anatomy of an Air Disaster
John Goodson (or Godson, can't remember), 1978

Good book about a Pan Am crash in Pago Pago in 1974. What was interesting was this crash killed almost everyone onboard - there were only about 10 survivors, but no one was killed by the actual crash. Those who didn't make it were killed by the smoke and fire.

Crash, the Story of Eastern Airline's Crash December 29, 1972
Rob & Sarah Elder, 1977

and

The Ghost of Flight 401
John G. Fuller, 1976

Both about Eastern's L-1011 crash in the Everglades.

Deadly Departure
Why the Experts Failed to Prevent the TWA Flight 800 Disaster and How It Could Happen Again

Christine Negroni, 2000

The crash and aftermath of TWA 800.

Some of the above books are no longer in print, but all of them can be found at

http://www.alibris.com

Two non-crash books are

Splash of Colors The Self-destruction of Braniff International
John J. Nance, 1984

About Braniff between 1965 and 1982.

From Prairie to Planes
Darwin Payne and Kathy Fitzpatrick, 1999

About commercial aviation in the Dallas Ft. Worth area and the bulding of DFW Airport.
