Despite the weak economy, the Washington-Baltimore air market keeps attracting new domestic service. Here's the latest arrival at BWI:
Skyway Airlines Introduces Service to Baltimore, Improves Raleigh/Durham Service; Midwest Express Enhances Orlando and Las Vegas Service
MILWAUKEE, Dec. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Skyway Airlines, The Midwest Express
Connection, said today it will introduce service between Milwaukee and
Baltimore/Washington International Airport. The airline will offer the only
nonstop service on the route twice each weekday beginning January 31, 2002.
Flights have been scheduled to provide convenient connections throughout the
Midwest Express and Skyway systems.
"With the addition of service to Baltimore, travelers can now fly nonstop
on Midwest Express or Skyway from Milwaukee to all three Washington, D.C.-area
airports," pointed out James P. Rankin, president of Skyway Airlines. "In
particular, we think business travelers will appreciate the convenience and
quality of our service."
Service on the route will be operated by Fairchild Aerospace 328JET
aircraft -- regional jets featuring state-of-the-art technology, 32 reclining
leather seats with a 31" pitch and the widest and tallest passenger cabins in
their class. Exceptional inflight service including light meals -- full
beverage service, complimentary champagne, along with baked-onboard chocolate
chip cookies on select flights -- further enhances the travel experience.
At the same time, Skyway will launch a third daily roundtrip between
Milwaukee and Raleigh/Durham, N.C. each weekday.
Additionally, Midwest Express Airlines announced that it will enhance its
Orlando and Las Vegas service during the upcoming peak travel period. Between
February 9 and April 30, Midwest Express will add a roundtrip flight between
Milwaukee and Orlando four times weekly. It will also add a roundtrip flight
between Milwaukee and Las Vegas twice weekly between March 2 and May 31.
"These are certainly challenging times for the airline industry," said
Thomas J. Vick, senior vice president and chief marketing officer of Midwest
Express. "But we believe it's important to look ahead, and be responsive to
our customers' requests for new service and additional service to existing
destinations. While much has changed since September 11, our dedication to
providing 'the best care in the air' remains constant."
Midwest Express Airlines features primarily nonstop service to major
destinations throughout the United States. Astral Aviation, Inc. -- its wholly

which offers connections to Midwest Express as well as point-to-point service

Where will the airport put them? Amazingly, the airport's website shows that BWI's two most recent arrivals, AirTran and Pan Am III, use D Concourse. That's US Airways' concourse, and they've long resisted subleasing their ample empty space to competitors. Maybe they've stopped waging war on competition at BWI.

Give Midwest Express some time. If the BWI route turns out to have strong demand, we may see the real MidEx in there within a couple of years.
Meanwhile, it's great to see AirTran entering. I think that we're going to see BWI continue to grow as a low-fare mecca. There are lots of routes that Southwest doesn't serve or which can bear two carriers. And the airport has proven strong demand for low-fare travel.
