The circumstances this had to happen under are obviously tragic, but according to Miami-Dade County Aviation Director Angela Gittens, MIA is now America's #1 airport in international travel, surpassing JFK and LAX (it was barely behind LAX), thanks to traffic to Latin America being, for the most part, not very affected. Due to 9/11, MIA saw the suspension of services to only two major international destinations, Munich (which is resuming in the summer) and Istanbul (may resume in the far future), and reduced frequency only to Amsterdam and Paris. It also added new flights to Barcelona, Venezuela and increased frequency to Caracas, Valencia, Port-Au-Prince, Lima, Guayquil, Tegucigalpa, Managua, Turks & Caicos, Toronto, Guatemala City, and Barquisimeto.

AA and UA are to thank for stealing the South American routes as well as the Carribean from JFK and adding them to MIA.

AA and UA terminals look so empty. Gone are the golden days when JFK was the true place to greet the world :-( AA, UA and DL at JFK are nowhere near the size there as PA and TW were in theri final years.

Yea, but at MIA you have a bunch of small boring planes. LAX is full of 747s, 777s and most all widebodies.

yeah really at MIA you get A320, DC-9, MD-80, 737 on these international routes. At LAX and JFK you get 777 747 A340 A330 etc...

life wasn't worth the balance, or the crumpled paper it was written on

You guys have no idea what you are talking about...

LanChile A340s and 767s (upwards of 5 flights a day)
Aerolineas Argentinas 742s (3 a week)
Delta 762s, 763s, 764s (8-10 a day)
Northwest DC-10s (5x a week)
Martinair 763s (10x a week)
Avianca 762s (varies)
LAB A310s (6 a week)
Premiair 332s (charter)
Air Transaat L1011s (charter)
American A300s, 763s and 772s (more than 50 a day)
United 763s and 772s (about 12 a day)
British Airways 744s (twice a day)
Iberia 742s and 343s (4 times a week 343; 10 for 742)
Air France 744s and 343s (depends on season; daily to 12x a week to double daily)
Lufthansa 744s (daily)
LTU 332s (weekly)
Swissair 332s (daily)
Virgin Atlantic 744s (daily)
Alitalia MD11s (daily)
Varig MD11s, 762s, 763s (twice a day)
TAM 332s (twice a day; soon three)
Air Canada 763s (1-2 a day)
Aero Continente (daily)
Edelweiss 332s (this summer)
Universal Airways 763s (coming soon)
Southern Winds 763s (coming soon)
(nearby FLL also gets SAA 744s, DL 762s, 763s, 764s, and 772s, Air Transaat Tristars, and Condor 763s)

Passenger wise on the busiest day MIA will get nine 747s (AR, VS, LH, two each from BA, IB, AF), and about 20-25 777s (all from UA and AA). Yes, we do get smaller planes too, but it all adds to the variety. Can you name another US city that get's Iberia A319s, Surinam Airways 727s, and Air France Regional ERJ-145s? I don't think so. And when the A380 comes along, Lufthansa and Air France have already publicly stated thier intention to fly it to MIA. Iberia and Virgin are expected too as well. And trust me, you don't become the number one international gateway in the United States (for however long that lasts) with a bunch of "small and boring" planes.

Sorry but MIA still does not beat LAX when it comes to widebody variety. LAX gets three times the 747's that MIA gets on a daily basis. Qantas, ANZ, BA and AF alone have 9 747's per day, and i'm not mentioning Asiana, Korean Air, Eva Air, Phillipine Airlines, Virgin Atlantic, Singapore Airlines, Air Pacific, Northwest, United, Air China, KLM, Thai Airways, Malaysian, Cathay Pacific, China Airlines, Corsair, All Nippon, Japan Airlines and some that i'm probably forgetting. (All of which operate 747's.)

I never said MIA get's better widebodies, but MIA's widebody variety is NOTHING to complain about. Most US airports don't even get 747s at all, like Dallas-Ft. Worth.
