CX has ordered 3-A340-600's for delivery next year and 2003. The first one is expected to be delivered mid-2002.
Does this make CX the launch customer as they were with the 777?

Flight International says that if Virgin don't take their A340-600s, then Cathay will become launch customers.

CX was one of the original member of the Work Together team for designing the 777-200 and a launch customer for the 777-300.
But their A340-600 are leased from ILCF, does this still makes them a launch customer???

Wasn't Swissair a launch customer for the A346? I know that their order is now cancelled, but didnt they sign up for the A346 very early on?

Thank you for all the replies. It seems it's very hard to say who is the launch customers. Anyway, if CX is making financial lease from ILFC, then it would make no diff. from owning the acfts. Financial lease would be a good way to save some money. So it would be an financial decision rather than an opearational decision.

It would be a financial lease if CX do all the maintenance for the leasing acfts.

Air Canada will be the Launch customer for the Airbus 340-500 not the 600.

The Cathay A340-600s will be flown HKG-JFK non-stop. They will have 3 aircraft, and use them all on that route. Not sure if they will have time for a quick Asian turn-around as well or not.

Air Canada is supposed to get their first A340-600 next August. Not sure, but I THINK this is earlier than CX's originally planned deliveries. VS' first two 346's are due in June, but I have no idea what's happening with those. SR's first 346 was due in July, so if CX is getting SR's, and VS is not getting any, then maybe that would make CX first? whew....

Next flight.... who knows.

CX does not operate the B777-200ER's. They were, as correctly pointed out, the launch customer for the B777-300.

If CX launched the A340-600, a possibility, then it would have launched two of the longest commercial airliners in the world.  Smile

Ths for the info, CXflyboy.

Yes, CX operates no 772ER. All their 777s are used for intra-Asian destinations if I am not mistaken.

A few months ago, I believe! I'm not sure myself, but it came up in several threads on here, in the summer. I don't know what the original order was, but Bill Harms' (usually reliable) website currently shows two -600's and 3 500's coming (or the other way around), with one of the -600's actually being first. I believe this is accurate as of right now. But i don't know what was behind the decision, or if there is any press release or anything.

This thread seems to explain it: The 3 346's will effectively replace 3 of the 744's, or at least that is one scenario.
