Southwest Growth At ISP

Southwest announced today the first expansion of its service since Sept. 11th. Included in this expansion is:

-- Long Island/Islip and Orlando (for a total of two daily nonstop flights)
-- Long Island/Islip and Ft. Lauderdale (for a total of two daily nonstop flights)

Maybe this is the result of Delta Express reducing its operations at ISP. It is nice to see Southwest still strong, especially at Islip / Long Island MacArthur Airport. This brings up an interesting question. Before Sept. 11th, Southwest and the Town of Islip announced plans for expanding the airport. These plans included 4 new gates and parking garages. Does anyone know if Southwest still plans to go through with their construction, considering this new expansion at ISP?

It is so good to hear Southwest is doing good at ISP, and I hope the expansion at ISP continues!

Greetings:

That's great news. I also would like to know what their terminal plans are. ISP has more then enough room to expand the terminal and build a parking garage. Plus a parking garage might have some good photo ops Big grin

Thanx

ISP definately has lots of potential. The Long Island region is very dense, and it allows people to avoid congested LGA, EWR, and JFK.

I definately see a very bright future for ISP, we may even see more airlines serving it.

Regards.

In 1999 (I think) the terminal just finished a major expansion, so I don't think the termianl will expand anymore (at least for now). A parking garage would be a good thing for ISP (maybe they would let spotters use the parking garage since the place were spotters usually go has been closed)

Any chance we could see JetBlue at ISP? or Spirit or Midway?

Does Airtran go there?

Jetblue, no chance. JFK is far too close to fly an A320, so no expansion for them into ISP.

Spirit use to fly into ISP, but heard SWA really forced them out, not as good idea for a new carrier to take on SWA.

Air Tran, not sure, they seem to want to build up LGA more, plus I think they'd prefer to stay away from SWA, even though no routes out of there would compete.

As for Midway, I doubt the airport would want an airline that'll be under in 2-3 months and then they'd be left holding the bill. Most suppliers are already asking for cash up front just to supply Midway.

I wouldn't discount the possibility of AirTran. LGA is awfully delay-prone, and as you note AirTran wouldn't compete directly with Southwest.

I wish Southwest would add similar non stops to MCO and FLL from BDL as well. There is no more metroJet, I'm not sure if Delta Express reduced service as well.

In addition to the two new roundtrips out of ISP to MCO and FLL, Southwest also announced one new roundtrip each beween BWI-MCO, BWI-FLL, and BWI-MHT. For these 5 new roundrips, Southwest will use two aircraft. I thought the breakdown was interesting.

Plane #1:

Dp MCO 07:15 Ar BWI 09:25 2h 10 mins block time
35 minute layover at BWI

Dp BWI 10:00 Ar MHT 11:15 1h 15 mins block time
30 minute layover at MHT

Dp MHT 11:45 Ar BWI 13:05 1h 20 mins block time
30 minute layover at BWI

Dp BWI 13:35 Ar FLL 16:15 2h 40 mins block time
30 minute layover at FLL

Dp FLL 16:45 Ar BWI 19:15 2h 30 mins block time
30 minute layover at BWI

Dp BWI 19:45 Ar MCO 22:00 2h 15 mins block time

Total block time - 12h 10 mins
Total layover time - 2h 35 mins
14h 45 minutes = aircraft's working day.

Plane # 2:

Dp ISP 07:55 Ar FLL 11:00 3h 05 mins block time
30 minute layover at FLL

Dp FLL 11:30 Ar ISP 14:25 2h 55 mins block time
30 minute layover at ISP

Dp ISP 14:55 Ar MCO 17:30 2h 35 mins block time
30 minute layover at MCO

Dp MCO 18:00 Ar ISP 20:30 2h 30 mins block time

Total block time - 11h 05 mins
Total layover time - 1h 30 mins
12h 35 minutes = aircraft's working day

Pretty amazing what an airline can do with 2 planes. God Santa - please bring me a life  Smile

A few of you remarked on photo-op availability if a new parking garage were to be built. If you are at all serious, write up a petition and send it to me or post it. I'd see that it got to the right town representative.

Just a thought: Atop the new garage, a glassed-in area with a great view of the planes. I'd suggest naming it too, like "Freedom Observatory". We could let it be a testament to our resilience to terrorism and our support of aviation.

There are a plethora of excellent ideas on this forum. Wouldn't be great to see at least a few come to fruitition?

Thanks for your time.

Mirrodie.........Im not sure if you would know this, but do you know if the spotting area along the fence opposite the terminal (along Ronkonkoma Ave / smithtown Ave) will ever be opened again? I emailed ISP about this a few days ago, but I haven't gotted a responce yet.

No word on it yet.
Honestly, I had the best views from the area near the airport fire dept.

The best view I have NOW is from the Connetquot river, when I go rowing.

Mirrodie.....How do you get to the spotting area near the airport fire dept? And I hope they do re-open the spot near the fence along Ronkonkoma Ave/ Smithtown Ave, I haven't been to that spotting area since the end of August. And I would love to go there again and sit and watch the planes (last time I was there I saw Southwest Airlines "Nevada One" coming in!) I just wish they would pave the area or something, there is so many potholes there!

Greetings:

That area near Ronkokoma Ave opens and closes for no reason. Two weeks ago it was open and then this week it's closed. What's the deal???? Time to call Islip Town and bitch. BTW did anyone go past the terminal recently? There's some big construction going on right near the Southwest wing. Maybe its the new gates for Southwest????

Thanx
Tom
