After today's events at CLT, which it seems is becoming an all too common occurrence, I began to ask myself this question... Were "breaches of security" such as this one (i.e. unplugging the scanners, falling asleep on duty, etc.) just as common before 9/11 and are merely receiving more publicity now? Or, has security actually gotten worse (is this actually possible?) because the personnel have nothing to lose as they know that their jobs are soon to be eliminated and therefore choose to act irresponsibly in revenge?
Understand that I have always held the opinion that American airport security is a joke, both before AND after September 11th, especially in comparison to European airports.

I recall hearing of some security breaches, serious enough to require the clearing of concourses and mass re-screenings, before September 11. Your first theory therefore sounds about right.

It seems to me most of the security measures now implemented in response to 9/11 are superficial "quick-fixes" that don't really prevent anything. Security breaches were an everyday occurance before 9/11, they just didn't recieve that much publicity. Remember a few weeks ago when someone bypassed security in ATL and they evacuated the whole terminal and rescreened everyone? An ATL official noted that if that same incident occured pre-9/11, the terminal wouldn't have been evacuated.
