Tape Gauges, Why?

I was wondring what is the advantage (or disadvantage) with tape engine gauges, instead of the normal circular ones.
I knew that some L1011 had such gauges, and I also know that NWA has in their Dc10 and B742's

My question is why?

They thought that they could save alot of weight. Oil shortage back when they came out. CRT's and LCD's are lighter still.
