Hello! Hkgspotter1, B0047, VH-DAQ and myself spent a very nice morning at old Kai Tak, followed by a brilliant afternoon at Chek Lap Kok. A number of topics have been posted here in recent weeks concerning the state of Kai Tak, so I thought you might want to have a look at the photos below. By the way, do you think I should upload these to a.net?

The old checkerboard:

View of the checkerboard from the park below:

View of the runway from the checkerboard:
http://www.the-wu.org/uploads/kaitak_0801_nw.JPG

View of the airport from the top of the old carpark:
http://www.the-wu.org/uploads/kaitak_0826_nw.JPG

Basically, the site itself and the buildings are mostly still there, except that they are now being used for various other purposes, e.g. car show rooms, go-kart circuit, golf course, car parks etc.

Just in case you are curious as to what we saw at the REAL airport today, here are two photos that I have just submitted:

http://www.airliners.net/addphotos/big/CX772_011223_anet.JPG

http://www.airliners.net/addphotos/big/JA744_011223_2_anet.JPG

I'm not sure how to make the photos open up automatically on this page. Could someone help? Thanks in advance!!

those are good! Who has the airport land now? Did they ever tear down the terminal or is some of the old airport still there?

Coincidentally, today, during my visit home to Ireland for Christmas, I found an album of photos from dear old Kai Tak. Oh, what wonderful, wonderful memories from a much loved airport.

I visited CLK last month and certainly, one cannot deny it's a hugely impressive airport, but I still miss Kai Tak immensely. Long may it's memory live. The corporate world places no value on history, so it's enthusiasts like us who have to keep the memory alive.

So many wonderful memories. I can close my eyes, recall the yellow floor tiles, getting into the lift, pressing 7, out onto the roof, the blast of warm air . . . a 747 banking for finals, the roar as it goes by.

Kai Tak, the memory will never die.

Kaitak,

Your correct. It will never die. While at the checker board today I was thinking about the last time I was there. June 20th 1998. The day I took these:

Really nice photos,Daryl.
Never been to Kaitak, sadly enough. But went with CX from LHR to CLK and Cebu 6 weeks ago. The flights with CX were some of the best I've ever experienced. I am sure that Kaitak was very special but CLK is an impressive airport. On my way back I got to know it quite well as I spent 10 hours there (due to bad connections) and I really enjoyed myself. CLK is so spacious with lots of nice shops, CLK is toghether with CPH and Changi my favorite airports.

Yes, it was great seeing Kai Tak today, just wished i were there, before it closed. There's some car showrooms in the arrivals hall now - selling some VERY expensive, and very nice Ferraris, Porsches, and BMWs. Looks like Kai Tak can't keep away from fast, expensive machines!!

Now I wish I did more spotting when Kai Tak was open! I had only been to the roof of the carpark a few times, and also the observation deck when it was open (this was really many years ago!). Didn't realise the checkerboard provided such a great view.

The two CLK photos don't show up any more cos they were rejected. Guess I'll have to re-edit them and try again. In the meantime, you may want to have a look at some similar shots from last time we were at CLK:

WHY ARE THE TWO CLK PHOTOS MISSING ???, YOU NEVER EVEN SENT THEM TO JOHAN FOR CHECKING SO HE HAS NO REASON TO DELETE THEM. YOU POSTED THEM, THEY ARE NOT FROM THIS SITE.

Have they given you a reason for deleting those two VERY NICE pics.

This site does Pee me off sometimes.

HKSpotter, don't worry, I did upload them to a.net last night, and the link was to the 'pending upload' file on a.net. But this morning I received an email to say that they were rejected. The email suggests some adjustments to the pics. I'll give it another attempt later this morning.

Perhaps you could help me link the photos on B0047's website here (sorry, still haven't found out how to make the photos open automatically). One that I quite like is:

these are really great photos guys, I hope Kai Tak was still there to see the planes making that famous 47 degree turn. That makes me consider going to Hong Kong to see from closer what remains of Kai Tak and to take a look at the new Chek Lap Kok.

Congrats for the gorgeous photos  Big thumbs up !

I'm very happy and proud to see today's Chek Lap Kok... But I'm very unhappy to see Kai Tak, I have too much memory in Kai Tak... The car park roof, the gate, the runway and the 45 degree turn...  Crying

I've now had time to upload more Kai Tak photos. Here they are:

Buses parked on the old apron.

I would have been first in line to buy one of these new flats if KT was still open. Imagine the view of the runway!

Don't really know what this is.

I wonder when was the last time someone went up there.

Unlike spotters, I'm sure residents of these flats are delighted with the closure of KT.

People who saw us there on Sunday must have thought that we were several years too late....

What used to be HAECO

Many thanks to B0047 for the use of his website to post these photos!

Well, KT was much much too small. For passengers, arriving there at peak hours could have been a nightmare. I remember once arriving and having to wait half an hour just for the lift to the carpark.

Yes, pity it closed, i always thought they'd dig up the harbour, and put a second runway, or something...

This, however, would really make my day...

Merry Christmas, everyone
