What The Checkerboard At Kai Tak?

Hey All!!

I have been wondering for a quite a while now what is this checkboard that is found near Kai Tak? I know this is probably a dumb question or most likey has been answered before but please anyone with a good explaination please help me out!

I've always been told that pilots would 'aim' for the checkerboard on finals to make sure that they would be lined up for the runway when they made the turn.....

I remember reading that before the IGS was introduced, the pilots would fly at a heading of 088 while aiming at the checkerboard... and before they crash into the hill, they would execute a 47-degree right turn.
