Caught the tail end of this from the ATC feed: AA 1586 (Los Angeles - Toronto) apparently had some mech. problems on approach. According to the cockpit, a flap wouldn't behave, so they were going to do a flaps up landing on Rwy. 23. 107 on board, and 12,000 lbs of fuel remaining (no dumping mentioned); a 25 mile final was taken. Emergency vehicles called out, but luckily not needed. Can't hear the communications with the tower, but all evidently went well -- the runway was very soon in regular use again. I suppose it may have been a hard landing...

Anyone have any more info. about this? Or how often this sort of thing happens?

On a lighter note, a later communication between YYZ approach and a pilot (commuter airline):
approach: i can give you a visual too if you like
pilot: um, we're still looking for the airport!

Leaves a nice mental picture of a plane staggering around the airspace, wondering where's the field? where's the field?

(they found it about a minute later, to ruin the picture)

Well, it would have been an AA 738.

Thanks kp....I'll watch the news 2nite.

I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.
