Avioimpex also leases one DC9 from JAT.
Here is a government press release issued close to the end of last year:
MAT and Avioimpex to merge
Macedonian Air Transport (MAT), Macedonia's flagship carrier, announced on Tuesday it would start merger talks, ordered by the government, with its rival, Avioimpex, the country's second airline. The government assigned MAT as
flagship carrier last month on the proviso that it merge with Avioimpex in order to become more competitive with international airlines.
According to officials from both airlines, the talks should be completed in six months. Avioimpex transported 312,000 passengers in the first ten months of this year and has six planes, one of which is used for cargo. MAT has transported 268,000 passengers in the same period with four leased planes. MAT does not fly cargo.

They have cancelled all flights to ZRH since about 2 weeks. In Jetstream (Swiss Aviation Magazine) it was reported that they have suspended all operations on 27/11/01. To bad...

So does anyone know whether Avioimpex merged with MAT, or did it really go out of business?
Macedonian aviation certainly went through tense times, especially this year, when Albanian terrorists interrupted traffic at Skopje airport and created civil unrest throughout the country. USA and EU should be shameful on its double standard on international terrorism.

Apparently Macedonian Airlines will be upgrading their fleet with airbus aircraft, however due to the situation with the albanian terrorists this has been delayed.
Also Avioimpex had plans to upgrade their fleet to beoing 737-600 and 737-700 aircraft. There were articles on both airlines in different aviation magazines "Airways" July 2001 and " Airline World Magazine" Novemeber 2001.
With a country of Macedonia's size and current economy 1 airline is enough. Macedonia is not yet ready to be able to have 3 to 4 airlines like it once did.
Just 1 simply called " Macedonian Airlines " with a nice new fleet of western aircraft and a better network.
Both airlines have had merger talks for a few years now they could not come to a proper agreement and talks have been put on hold several times this year and I can imagine why, it goes back to those Albanian terrorists which have crippled Macedonia's economy.
So it is interesting to know whether Avioimpex is merging with Macedonian airlines or whether they going down.
Like to see Macedonian Airlines with 777's one day.

What is going to happen with the services that Avioimpex had, are they going to be transfered to the new merged airline or are they going to be ceased.

Sorry for the mistake on the DC9 for Avioimpex. That aircraft previously belonged to Adria Airways, registered as YU-AHW. On the other hand, Macedonian Airlines currently operate three aircraft that belong to JAT Yugoslav Airlines, one DC9 and two B737-300s.
YU-ANI (Z3-AAA)
YU-AJL (Z3-AAB)
YU-ANL (Z3-ARF)
To my knowledge, Macedonian Airlines have already returned one DC9 back to JAT, YU-AJJ (ZR-ARE).

717fan,
That is very interesting. I am assuming it is misprint but then again arlines like Avioimpex and Macedonian Airlines tend to do things without announcements, however as per my previous post there was an article on Avioimpex with Avioimpex advising that their fleet
will be replaced with Boeing 737-600'snd 737-700's.
But once again it is an interesting one..
PS: Avioimpex have cancelled alot of their flights for January 2002 so I am still interested to know what is happening to this airline..

I can also see that there is a flight at Gothenburg tomorrow with Avioimpex arriving from Copenhagen.
I don`t know if the flight is going to be canceled.
