MAS will suspend its 4 times weekly B777 services to Zurich in the summer. If I am not mistaken, MAS is the only B777 service provider ar Zurich.

Swissgabe, are you sure with your informations about MAS at ZRH? Where did you see that?

In my opinion, this is a bit weird to replace the B772 with an even bigger B744, if the loads are really a problem on the KUL-ZRH leg. How much pax would MAS need on the ZRH-FCO leg to justify such a flight?

Anyway, as a spotter - on the other hand - this gives me the chance to take pics of a new airliner/livery.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

As for Ryanair to ZRH: I doubt it, given that Ryanair operates smaller airports and not hubs. ZRH isn't really very good for low fare airlines, Easyjet beeing perhaps an exception, as they are very good established in Switzerland. VEX on the other hand has already cut one of their 3-daily BRU-ZRH flights. GO was also only 6 months in ZRH.

Hello

Crossair will bring two additional flights daily between BSL and ZRH. That makes it five daily flights in each direction.

I flew this route a few times this year. Flying time is about 15 minutes from BSL to ZRH +about 20 minutes taxiing.  Smile
From ZRH to BSL it usually takes a little bit longer because the planes usually approach runway 16 in BSL which is in the opposite direction of Zurich.

It's quite a nice flight tough.
Hope this helps,

Thanx RJ100.

As for the current situation at ZRH, it could almost be called a secondary airport. It has lost alot of pax and as such could see Ryanair service soon. But the last i heard was that Ryanair were planning on using BSL as ZRH West or something like that. It just doesnt seem to be Ryanair's strategy to be convienient, just cheap.

ciao

YEP! I herad the same rumour about Ryanair starting services to BSL.

As for the traffic at ZRH: does anybody have some actual numbers regarding number of pax and movements? I read, that ZRH was heavily affected by 9-11 and above all by the SR grounding.

Yes, Ryanair intends to fly to Switzerland. It just depends if Basel airport is going to lower landing taxes enough (BTW they are lower than in ZRH). There are also several small airports in Southern Germany (close to Switzerland) that want to see Ryanair, such as Lahr airport or Karlsruhe.

I wouldn't mind to see Ryanair here in BSL. On routes such as the London route we need some more competition.

Gerardo, I don't have actual numbers for ZRH. Try to find the "Statistisches Amt des Kantons Zürich" on the web if they have a webpage. The "Statistisches Amt des Kantons Basel-Stadt" has listed all traffic figures for BSL.

As a non UK carrier, Ryanair cannot fly from London to a Swiss Airport. They can, however, fly to Basle, using its french designation.

What about the bilateral agreements between the European Union and Switzerland? Is this scenario not included?

BTW, funny things happen here in BSL. Khalifa Airways (Algeria) was not allowed to fly to Basel-Mulhouse (MLH) because Air Algérie also flies to MLH. Now Khalifa flies to Basel-Mulhouse (BSL) with Swiss traffic rights. But it's the same airport!

Bestwestern: Why can't Ryanair fly to ZRH? Other british airlines can fly to ZRH, as for example Go and Flightline. Confused

Ryanair is not a British Airline. Therefore it is not allowed to fly from a UK airport to a non European Union airport.

A similar example is Buzz (KLMuk). They were not permitted to fly from Stansted to Warsaw by the polish authorities, as they are a dutch owned company.

The only airline with traffic rights from Stansted to Zurich is GO. UK carriers have to apply to the UK and Swiss CAA for traffic rights to Switzerland. There was a big arguement between EasyJet and Go at the time. The hearing notes are available here:

http://www.atol.org.uk/airlinelic/pdf_files/ald9902.pdf

GO only flew to Zurich for six months, ending the service, because of a far superior financial deal available at Naples.

Indeed Zurich has seen many airlines stop flying there over the last number of years.

From the UK alone:

Aer Lingus daily ex DUB
Swissair daily to STN
GO daily to STN
CityFlyer x3 daily to LGW (and onwards to DUB)
BMI x3 daily to LHR

ZRH is also gaining a number of flight. Think about TAM and Korean.

Bestwestern, just have to slip in one thing. As you obviously know, DUB is in Ireland and not in the UK. You could say that ZRH lost EI ex MAN (but that was 2-3 years before the ZRH flight ended)

JAL is coming again in April 02 with 5 weekly MD-11 flights. They will eventually offering a daily MD-11 flight from July 02 (ZRH-NRT).
Don't forget the small carrier like Balkan Airl., Albanian Airlines and Air Alps who has recently started operations to Zurich. Easyjet and Metropolis are planning to start (more) operations to ZRH.
For sure Zurich lost a lot of traffic with the SR demise, but it is still a very interesting destination for other carriers. I expect more foreign carriers in ZRH for the near future.

Zurich - Wednesday service suspended from February 28, 2002. From March 31, 2002 onwards, it will be upgraded to a B747, still serving 3 times weekly on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.

These flights will be loaded into the MAS's CRS for booking from January 15, 2002 onwards.

On a side note, MAS is also waiting for traffic rights from the Italian Government to offer passengers travel solely on the Zurich-Rome v.v sectors from March 1, 2002. The Swiss government had already granted MAS fifth freedom rights at Zurich after signing the liberal civil aviation agreement with the Malaysian Government last year.
