Pan Am was the first one to introduce nonstop flights bewteen New York and Tokyo with the 747-SP

Today JL, UA, NW, CO, NH and DL fly this route, but for how long does PA was the only one serving TYO nonstop from NYC ?

I do know NW started JFK-NRT nonstop in 1989 with the first ever 747-400 and that this route was the inaugural flight.

I also know that UA started EWR-NRT a long time ago and that JL flew DC-10´S to JFK

Cannot answer your questions, but DL does not fly JFK-NRT any more.

The JAL DC10's used to stop in Anchorage.

The United nonstops were with specially ordered 747-222's (only 2 in the fleet and they were dedicated to this route- check delivery dates). However, Northwest and JAL were already operating 747-200 nonstops by then.

Delta doesn't fly JFK-NRT any more. The route was pulled after Sept. 11th. It used to operate it with an MD-11 (April 2001 to September 2001).

United downgraded JFK-NRT from a 747-400 to a 777.

Northwest still flies the 747-400 but on occasion, the 747-200.

Japan Airlines and All Nippon both fly 747-400's.

Continental flies from Newark, using a 777.

An interesting tidbit: Boeing pushed very hard for JL to buy the 747SP. However, JL rejected the plane due to its much smaller pax load; instead, JL modified a number of 747-200's in their fleet with extra fuel capacity so they could fly JFK-NRT year-round.

They told me UA changed the JFK-NRT to a 772 because they needed the 744 for the failed JFK-HKG nonstop.

Besides, why did DL start JFK-NRT ?, they were alone.
UA and NH both codeshare their flights
JL and AA , NW and CO also codeshare their flights

DL was alone, and with the little domestic network they´ve got at JFK, it was hard to feed the flight

Delta dropped the flight because of September 11th and the weak Japanese economy. Furthermore, Delta was a "johnny come lately" in this market, which is really dominated by UA, NW, and JL.
