The JAL DC10's used to stop in Anchorage.
The United nonstops were with specially ordered 747-222's (only 2 in the fleet and they were dedicated to this route- check delivery dates). However, Northwest and JAL were already operating 747-200 nonstops by then.

An interesting tidbit: Boeing pushed very hard for JL to buy the 747SP. However, JL rejected the plane due to its much smaller pax load; instead, JL modified a number of 747-200's in their fleet with extra fuel capacity so they could fly JFK-NRT year-round.
