I've just got back from MAN after making a 100 mile journey in the snow to get some photo's from a spot overlooking the new runway (24L / 06R).
However all movements were taking place on 24R / 06L, with nothing happening on the 2nd runway. I know that usually this is closed between 1200 and 1500 but this was at 1050 and all movements were on the other runway. Does anyone know why this was and when it will be open again?

I don't have the NOTAM to hand, but runway 2 has been closed since before Christmas.
This has been to facilitate remedial work which was needed on some of the taxiways; the airport promoted it as a goodwill gesture to local residents over the Christmas period.
I "think" R2 reopens on Jan 4th or 5th.

Hi Dan330, i recently moved to manchester, i have not had a chance yet to visit the viewing gallery. i was wondering when is the best time to visit the airport movenments wise, and where is the best place to take pictures? i have a camera with a 28-90mm zoom, should a go to the open air viewing gallery or to a point along the perimeter?

cheers mike.

It should reopen on 2nd Jan. Best time to visit 8am to midday - should be 50 to 60 movements an hour, it ought to be 60 to 70 this summer - but if possible, stay all day!

Did you get a nice view of bmi's G-WWBM taking off for Washington at 1301?

I dispatched it! Pity I took a 20 minute delay because cabin crew can't always count properly!!

Firstly, why when I select the "Start new topic" option does it nearly always bring up the last message I posted - does anyone else have this problem??!
I hope this message doesn't end up in the Manchester's 2nd runway responses!!

BA CitiExpress - I know this new company includes what was British Regional Airlines, Brymon Airways and British Airways Regional (MAN/BHX)........but does it include LGW-based Cityflyer Express??

Thanks for letting me know about that, I won't try tomorrow then!!

I saw the bmi Chicago flight go out and got a good picture as it climbed away, but I was on my way home before the Washington flight, I'd had a bad day, going in bad weather, getting the car stuck etc and I only got about 10 OK pictures.

To Tristar4ever, the best spot for photography is over by the new runway, when it re-opens.
I have a guide on my web site with more info:
http://www.plane-mad.com/man.php

Thanks everyone for your help.

Hi

Runway 2 will be closed between 16th Dec and 2nd Jan due to low movements.

Hmmmm, low movements ??

Wonder why we went round ROSUN 3 times last week then (and it wasn't an LVP day)  Sad

The reason is that there are urgent remedial repairs which need attending to and whilst traffic takes it's usual slight dip over the holiday season, it has given the airport an opportunity to complete them all uninterrupted by closing off R2 and the associated taxiways.

The claim by the airport that it was a goodwill gesture to local residents is pure spin.

Shamu

UK NOTAMS are available at

http://www.ais.org.uk

Then follow the links for "UK Aerodrome Information"

Always worth a check before-hand if you're relying on a certain runway being open! Big grin
