Back in 1984 the MD-11 was just an idea on the drawing board, and the Father of the aircraft, the DC-10, was still regarded as modern. Photo must have been taken in 1994, everyone is correct in saying that the MD-11 first flew in 1990.

On a tangential note, I recall seeing a picture of a Continental DC-10 from 1982(ish) that had the MD-11 style winglets, apparently as part of some research in conjunction w/ NASA. These apparently evolved into the winglets of the MD-11.
